Plot Summary

In the tumultuous year of AD 859, as the Tang dynasty teeters on the brink of collapse, a multitude of rebellious factions emerge to challenge the tyrannical government that has long oppressed the masses. Among these, the House of Flying Daggers, rooted in the stronghold of Fengtian, rises as a formidable force, employing their arsenal of precision throwing daggers to plunder from the opulent and redistribute wealth among the impoverished, earning the admiration of the locals. Two tenacious police officers, Leo (Andy Lau) and Jin (Takeshi Kaneshiro), are dispatched with an impossible task: eliminate the enigmatic leader of the House of Flying Daggers within a decade, a mission hampered by the fact that no one is aware of the leader’s identity.

To further complicate matters, Leo takes Mei (Zhang Ziyi), a mesmerizing blind dancer suspected of being the previous leader’s daughter, into custody. Meanwhile, Jin orchestrates a daring jailbreak, feigning sympathy for the rebellion to gain Mei’s trust. As Mei and Jin embark on their perilous journey to the Flying Daggers’ stronghold, Leo pursues them relentlessly with reinforcements. Inevitably, Mei and Jin succumb to the intoxicating allure of romance.

To enhance the deception, Leo and his cohorts stage a fake ambush, but soon find themselves ambushed for real by a contingent of soldiers. At a clandestine meeting, Leo reveals that the military has become embroiled in the conflict, seeking the eradication of both Jin and Mei. A few days later, the pair is nearly exterminated in a treacherous bamboo forest, only to be rescued by the House of Flying Daggers and whisked away to their stronghold. At this pivotal moment, Mei’s blindness is exposed as a ruse, rendering her not the actual daughter of the former leader. Furthermore, she is revealed to be engaged to Leo, who has been masquerading as a police officer while secretly belonging to the House of Flying Daggers. The rebels, undaunted by the military’s involvement, eagerly anticipate an open confrontation. A heartbroken Leo confesses to Mei that he had waited patiently for her over three years since his undercover operation began, only to be met with the devastating revelation that she has set her sights on Jin.

As the tempestuous dynamics between Leo and Mei reach a boiling point, their superior, Nia, intervenes with calculated precision, impaling Leo with a dagger and reassigning him to new missions, effectively severing his connection with Mei. The sudden separation leaves Mei grappling with a life-or-death decision when she’s ordered to execute Jin, her former ally turned adversary. With an unwavering commitment to the House’s code of honor, Mei chooses to defy her orders and set Jin free instead, refusing to abandon her post.

As Mei reconsiders her position and sets out to reunite with Jin, she finds herself ambushed by Leo, who unleashes a deadly barrage of daggers. With superhuman reflexes, Mei deflects one blade, but the other proves mortal, piercing her chest and seemingly ending her life. As the storm rages on, Jin discovers Leo’s true identity and the two engage in a fierce battle, their skills locked in a stalemate.

Exhausted and wounded, both combatants pause to survey the desolate landscape as the military closes in on the House. In a desperate bid for dominance, Leo retrieves Nia’s dagger from his own back and brandishes it menacingly against Jin. Mei, miraculously revived, reappears, her breast still pierced by the deadly blade, threatening to exact a terrible revenge upon Leo. As the two enemies lock eyes, Jin intervenes, pleading with Mei to spare her life.

As the standoff reaches a fever pitch, Leo feigns a final, desperate throw at Jin, anticipating that Mei will finish him off with her dagger. However, Mei’s unwavering commitment to self-preservation prompts her to attempt to intercept Leo’s blade in mid-air, resulting in a tragic outcome: only Mei falls victim to the deadly dance. As the storm subsides, an anguished Leo stumbles away from the carnage, while Jin mourns the loss of his fallen companion, eulogizing Mei as a rare beauty whose like he will never encounter again. The ultimate fate of the House and its defenders remains shrouded in uncertainty.
