Plot Summary

In the sprawling metropolis of 18th-century Qing dynasty China, Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-fat), a renowned Wudang swordsman, and Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh), the enigmatic leader of a private security company, have long been bound by an unspoken understanding, their mutual attraction tempered by a sense of loyalty to their departed friend, Meng Sizhao. As Mu Bai contemplates retirement, he entrusts his legendary sword, the coveted “Green Destiny”, to Shu Lien, asking her to present it to their benefactor, Sir Te (Sihung Lung), in Peking.

Meanwhile, Yu Shu Lien’s chance encounter with the alluring Yu Jen (Zhang Ziyi), daughter of the powerful Governor Yu (Li Fazeng) and soon-to-be-married socialite, sets off a chain reaction of events. As Shu Lien navigates the intricacies of Beijing’s upper echelons, she finds herself entangled in a web of intrigue, courtesy of Sir Te’s warnings about the treacherous landscape of local politics.

The night air is thick with tension when a masked thief infiltrates Sir Te’s estate, absconding with the precious “Green Destiny”. Shu Lien and Master Bo (Gao Xi’an), Sir Te’s trusted servant, unravel the mystery, tracing the theft to Governor Yu’s compound, where Jade Fox (Cheng Pei-Pei), a mysterious figure shrouded in secrecy, has been masquerading as Jen’s governess for years. Unbeknownst to them, Jade Fox’s gaze is fixed on both Shu Lien and Jen, sensing an impending connection that threatens her own agenda.

As the stakes escalate, Mu Bai arrives in Beijing, his presence a harbinger of change. He confides in Shu Lien about the theft, and together they set their sights on unraveling the tangled threads of deceit. The arrival of Inspector Tsai (Wang Deming) and his daughter May (Li Li), hot on the trail of Jade Fox, whose own dark past has driven her to seek revenge against Governor Yu’s family, adds fuel to the fire.

In a climactic showdown, Jade Fox challenges the group to a battle of wits and steel, but just as defeat seems imminent, Mu Bai intervenes, employing his mastery of the Wudang arts to turn the tide. As the dust settles, the players are left to ponder the true extent of their involvement in this complex web of loyalty, duty, and passion.

As the truth begins to unravel, Fox reveals the shocking motivation behind her brutal murder of Mu Bai’s teacher: she had been wronged by him in the past, refusing to take her on as a student despite her desire to learn from him. Instead, he had chosen to share his secrets with another, prompting Fox to exact poetic justice by taking his life. Just as Mu Bai is poised to deliver vengeance, the enigmatic thief reappears, this time intervening on Fox’s behalf and allowing her to escape with the masked figure, who is later revealed to be none other than Jen Yu.

Mu Bai and Shu Lien are convinced that Fox has taken refuge in the Yu household, a discovery that threatens to undermine Governor Yu’s esteemed reputation. The delicate situation demands a measured approach, and so Mu Bai sets out to track down the masked thief, offering his expertise as her master. However, she declines, revealing instead a deep-seated anger towards Jen for having stolen the spotlight by defeating Fox in combat. Jen, meanwhile, is seething with resentment towards Fox for slaying the policeman.

As night falls, Lo, a ruthless desert bandit (Chang Chen), breaks into Jen’s chambers, extending an invitation to leave with him and start anew. A flashback transports us back in time, where we find Governor Yu’s family traveling through the arid wastelands when Lo and his marauders launched a surprise attack on their caravan. Lo had pilfered Jen’s prized comb during the chaos, prompting her to pursue him to his desert lair in pursuit of recompense. However, as they navigated the treacherous terrain together, their shared adversities kindled a fierce passion between them. Though Lo eventually convinced Jen to return to her family, he first shared with her an ancient legend about a brave soul who leapt from a precipice to fulfill his deepest desires. Despite the risks, this courageous individual’s pure heart allowed him to defy mortality.

As Lo arrived in Beijing to implore Jen against proceeding with her arranged marriage, she remained resolute in her decision. His subsequent interruption of her wedding procession, pleading with her to flee with him, fell on deaf ears. Shu Lien and Mu Bai, observing the turmoil, intervened, persuading Lo to await Jen’s arrival at Mount Wudang, a sanctuary from the wrathful reactions of her family towards his intrusion.

Meanwhile, Jen made a daring escape from her husband on their wedding night, before consummation was possible. Disguised as a man, she found herself confronted by a band of warriors at an inn; however, with the Green Destiny and her own remarkable combat skills at her disposal, she emerged victorious, having dispatched the assailants.

Jen’s subsequent visit to Shu Lien revealed that Lo awaited her at Mount Wudang. A heated exchange ensued, as Jen perceived Shu Lien’s actions as an attempt to entrap her and return her to her husband, while Shu Lien insisted she had merely been shielding her family since their initial encounter, aware of Jen’s pilfering of the sword. The tension culminated in a duel between the two women, with Shu Lien proving the superior fighter despite Jen’s mastery of the Green Destiny.

As each of Shu Lien’s weapons was destroyed by the sword, she eventually managed to vanquish Jen using a broken sword. When Shu Lien demonstrated mercy, Jen retaliated by wounding her in the arm. Mu Bai arrived on the scene, pursuing Jen into the bamboo forest. Confronting her, he offered his guidance as a teacher, which Jen initially accepted on condition that he could reclaim the Green Destiny from her within three moves.

To everyone’s surprise, Mu Bai successfully claimed the sword with a single move, only for Jen to renege on her promise of accepting him as her instructor. Enraged by this betrayal, Mu Bai discarded the sword over a waterfall, prompting Jen to follow suit. As she dove after it, Fox appeared, rescuing her and subsequently placing her into a drugged sleep within a cavern.

The discovery of Jen’s unconscious form by Mu Bai and Shu Lien was short-lived, as Fox suddenly reappeared, unleashing a barrage of poisoned darts upon them. Mu Bai employed his sword to deflect the projectiles, eventually avenging his master’s death by mortally wounding Fox. However, he soon realized that one of the darts had struck him in the neck.

As Fox succumbed to her injuries, she revealed her true intention: to eliminate Jen due to her hiding the secrets of Wudang’s most advanced fighting techniques from her.

As the gravity of Mu Bai’s situation sinks in, Jen embarks on a perilous quest to concoct an antidote for the poisoned dart that has left her mentor fighting for his life. Meanwhile, the stoic warrior prepares to bid farewell to this world, finally unburdening himself with a declaration of deep-seated passion for Shu Lien. His words hang in the air as he succumbs to the venom’s deadly grasp, his chest heaving one last time as he slips away, his eyes locking onto Shu Lien’s tear-stained face. The silence that follows is only broken by the sound of Jen’s hasty return, her arrival too little, too late to spare Mu Bai’s life.

In the aftermath of this tragic loss, Sir Te reclaims the legendary Green Destiny, a symbol of his people’s storied past. As Jen grapples with the weight of her mentor’s passing, she finds solace in the tranquil surroundings of Mount Wudang, where she shares one final, bittersweet night with Lo. The next morning, Lo awakens to find Jen standing at the precipice of the mountain, gazing out upon a breathtaking expanse of clouds and sky. It is as if the desert’s mystical energies have drawn them back together once more, this time to relive the timeless legend they had shared beneath the starry canvas. With a hint of resignation in her voice, Jen asks Lo to make a wish, her eyes sparkling with a fleeting glimmer of hope. Without hesitation, Lo’s heart beats out a simple yet profound desire: to be reunited with Jen once more, this time back in the desert’s golden light. And as if the universe itself has ordained their reunion, Jen takes the leap of faith, surrendering to the wind and sky as she soars among the clouds, free at last from the constraints of reality.
