In San Jose, California, we meet David Kim, portrayed by John Cho, who is desperately sifting through cherished old photographs and grainy videos of his beloved daughter Margot, brilliantly acted by Michelle La, as well as memories of his late wife, Pamela (played by Sara Sohn). Tragically, Pamela succumbed to lymphoma nearly two years prior, following a tumultuous battle with the illness that had offered fleeting hopes of remission. Since her passing, a palpable rift has developed between David and Margot, creating a palpable distance that both are struggling to bridge.

Margot, like any typical teenager, has her own vibrant life, embracing her passion for Pokemon and piano, but her connection to the outside world is increasingly digital. As the child of a single parent, she finds solace and companionship through her various social media platforms, intertwining her reality with that of her peers, communicating with them through video calls and social networking.

One fateful night, while David slumbers, Margot heads to a friend’s house for what should be a productive study session, making three unsuccessful attempts to contact her father during the evening. The escalation of events suggests that she may have voluntarily disappeared.

In his quest to uncover the truth about Margot’s whereabouts, David learns about her online interactions, especially with a girl known as “fish-and-chips”, a username that becomes pivotal in the investigation. Despite the initial optimism, subsequent revelations lead to the grim discovery of Margot’s car submerged at Barbosa Lake, with haunting indications that she might be in deep peril.

As the investigation unfolds, academic entanglements come to light, including David’s unexpected confrontation with Peter, portrayed by Joseph Lee, Margot’s uncle, leading to more shocking discoveries about their secretive interactions. In the end, through sheer determination and a spike of hope, Margot is discovered—her resilience shining through as she battles through to regain her life, even after the harrowing ordeal. Two years later, Margot stands at a new crossroad, applying for college to pursue her love of music, and we witness a profound evolution in her relationship with David, symbolized by a heartfelt shift in her computer’s wallpaper—a hopeful reflection of healing and new beginnings.
