What critical item do Meera and Henry leave behind during the break-in?
Meera and Henry, a married couple residing in a stunningly modern home in Corrales, New Mexico, face an unimaginable nightmare. This house, a creation of Henry Parsons, is not just a home; it embodies their hopes and dreams. After surviving cancer, Meera is grateful for her supportive husband, but her fears linger that the disease might reoccur.
One fateful evening, upon returning from a wonderful date night, they discover that their sanctuary has been violated; their living room is in disarray. The break-in only results in the theft of a laptop and their cell phones, which they had purposefully left behind to focus on their evening out. Following a detective’s visit, who suggests the need for a plumber after hearing strange pipe noises, Henry decides to install a security system to safeguard their home.
However, serenity is short-lived. A few nights later, strange sounds awaken Meera, causing concern when the lights won’t work. Henry checks their generator, only to discover its destruction. Realization dawns on him — the intruders have returned. In a desperate rush, he finds Meera bound in their bedroom. After managing to free her, they attempt to flee but are relentlessly pursued by masked invaders. Meera reaches their car just in time to witness gunshots echoing from the house, leading to a harrowing confrontation where Henry shoots and kills one of the assailants.
The next day, at the police station, they are shown photos of the three masked intruders, learning they belong to the troubled Cobb family known to live on the fringes of society. Adding to the trauma, they discover that a young woman from the same clan has gone missing.
Haunted by the recent events and disturbed by the revelation of Henry’s hidden gun, Meera strives for normalcy. Henry assures her that he has disposed of the weapon and wishes to host their intended housewarming party to restore some semblance of normalcy. While Henry heads out to gather supplies, Meera, concerned when she notices his wallet left behind and unable to reach him by phone, instinctively follows him. To her dismay, she finds he has driven to the hospital, leading to a car accident of her own.
After her car is towed, Meera borrows Henry’s vehicle for work. There, she meets Detective Steven Morse, who informs her that the last surviving intruder has died, meaning the case is closed. This news only deepens her suspicion, especially when she realizes the timing matches her fateful journey to the hospital.
Determined to uncover the truth, Meera investigates Henry’s vehicle’s GPS and discovers the Cobb family’s address. Sneaking into their trailer, she finds an envelope marked with Henry’s handwriting. A confrontation with a neighbor leads her to seize a package containing a video camera, prompting her to dig deeper into the mystery of Henry’s past and the Cobb family ties.
Back at home, she discovers unsettling photographs of the house’s construction, realizing Dylan Cobb was part of the crew. After further investigation, she uncovers a shocking connection to Christine, the missing girl. When she confronts Henry about his involvement with the Cobbs and the hidden gun he kept, he offers an explanation that brings her some relief, claiming his past mistakes include financial fraud related to the house’s construction and a desperate, misplaced threat from Dylan.
However, unease lingers in Meera’s mind. When the new video camera arrives, she views its contents only to find Dylan revealing sinister truths about his intentions regarding Christine. In a turning point, Meera discovers a hidden door in Henry’s office, leading her to an underground basement where Christine is held captive, chained helplessly. With Henry coming home, Meera fights back, her courage ignited by the truth of Henry’s perverse secret.
After a heart-stopping chase and a harrowing struggle, Meera ultimately defends Christine and confronts Henry for the last time. In a mix of horror and irony, she uses a clock, a gift from Henry, to bring about his tragic end. As he lies dying, he questions her capability to live independently, to which she confidently responds that she will learn to take care of herself.
The film concludes on a hopeful note, as Meera emerges from this ordeal, moving on from the now desolate house, symbolizing her liberation and resilience.
