Plot Summary

In the midst of turmoil and uncertainty, Naina Catherine Kapur (Preity Zinta) struggles to come to terms with a life marked by tragedy. The sudden loss of her father has left an indelible scar, forcing her mother Jennifer (Jaya Bachchan) to bear the burden of raising two young children, Shiv (Atith Naik) and Gia (Jhanak Shukla), alone. The family’s restaurant teeters on the brink of collapse, while Naina’s paternal grandmother, Lajjo (Sushma Seth), harbors deep-seated resentment towards Jennifer, blaming her for the family’s misfortunes.

As Naina navigates this treacherous landscape, she finds solace in the unwavering support of her mother and the bemusing affections of Rohit (Saif Ali Khan), her hapless MBA classmate. However, the arrival of Aman Mathur (Shahrukh Khan) in their lives sets off a chain reaction of events that will forever alter the course of Naina’s existence.

Aman’s well-intentioned meddling in the affairs of those around him is met with initial skepticism by Naina, who finds his effervescent enthusiasm and unwavering optimism both irritating and disarming. Yet, as she gradually warms up to Aman, she begins to reciprocate his affection, unaware that he is harboring a profound secret - one that will shatter her perceptions of reality.

As the story unfolds, Naina’s friend Rohit finds himself torn between his own romantic aspirations for her and Aman’s encouragement to take a chance. His attempts at confession are thwarted by Naina’s revelation of her growing feelings for Aman, prompting Rohit to retreat to his parents’ home, leaving Naina to confront the uncertainty that now surrounds her.

Aman’s true nature is eventually revealed, exposing the depth of his emotional scars and the fragility of his mortal existence. Despite this knowledge, he continues to orchestrate a series of events designed to facilitate meaningful connections between those around him, including Naina and Rohit. His selfless crusade ultimately culminates in a poignant sacrifice that will forever alter the trajectory of Naina’s life.

As the truth about Naina’s family dynamics begins to unravel, a revelation shakes the very foundations: Aman, with his keen intuition, stumbles upon a personal letter meant for Jennifer, exposing Gia as Naina’s half-sister, born from her father’s clandestine affair. The weight of this knowledge is alleviated by Jennifer’s remarkable capacity for forgiveness, a trait that ultimately led to her husband’s tragic demise.

With the emotional turmoil finally subsiding, Lajjo extends an olive branch to Gia, and the long-divided family unites in preparation for Rohit and Naina’s forthcoming nuptials. However, Aman’s health begins to deteriorate at an alarming rate, culminating in a life-threatening episode of intense excitement during the engagement party.

Naina’s chance encounter with Priya, Aman’s supposed wife, sets off a chain reaction of revelations: she learns that Priya is, in fact, Aman’s doctor and that he has been hiding his true condition, as well as possibly his deep-seated feelings for her. Confronting Aman, Naina finally comprehends the depth of his love, but he remains steadfast in his determination to keep their emotions hidden.

As Aman’s mortality becomes increasingly apparent, he implores Naina to marry Rohit, knowing that his own time is drawing to a close. Though initially hesitant, Naina ultimately agrees, and the two men exchange vows shortly thereafter. In his final moments, Aman extracts a solemn promise from Rohit: to allow him to reunite with Naina in the afterlife.

Two decades later, an older Naina shares the poignant tale of Aman’s selfless love with her grown daughter Gia, reminiscing about his unwavering devotion and the profound impact he had on their lives. As she reflects on the past, it becomes clear that neither she nor Rohit has forgotten the enigmatic figure who brought them together, and a new generation is born, ensuring that Aman’s legacy endures.
