Plot Summary

As the festive atmosphere of 1959 Christmas season envelops Goode’s department store in Sydney, Lisa arrives as a new assistant, bringing with her a fresh perspective. Amidst the hustle and bustle, she forges an unlikely bond with Fay, who initially harbors reservations about immigrants, Patty, who craves attention from her husband, and Magda, a warm-hearted Slovenian immigrant who introduces Lisa to her network of European friends. As Lisa settles into her new role, she becomes embroiled in the personal dramas unfolding around her.

Patty’s quest for attention leads her to purchase a pink nightdress, only to have her husband misinterpret her intentions and disappear for the season. Magda invites Lisa and Fay to a vibrant New Year’s Eve party at her cozy abode, where they meet Rudi, a charming Hungarian immigrant seeking a life partner, and Michael, the son of Hungarian immigrants who has adapted to Australian culture.

As the seasons change, so do the fortunes of Goode’s department store. A dress that had previously been priced at 150 guineas is marked down to 75 guineas during the summer sale, and later reduced to an affordable 50 guineas. Meanwhile, Patty’s husband returns, and their relationship is revitalized when she confesses her desire for attention.

Lisa’s academic prowess culminates in honours on her school leaving exam, prompting her to apply for a scholarship at Sydney University with the blessing of her father. Rudi’s romantic aspirations take flight as he proposes to Fay in his newly acquired apartment. Lisa’s dismay at the disappearance of her desired dress from the store shelves is short-lived, as Magda reveals that she had merely hidden it away, waiting for the perfect moment to re-release it at an affordable 35 guineas.

Lisa’s birthday party celebrates her test scores, and it is here that she dons her newly acquired dress. Magda shares her vision of opening a high-end fashion store, prompting Lisa to ponder her own aspirations beyond university. With a creative spark ignited by her love of literature, Lisa confides in Magda about her desire to become an actress, poet, novelist, or perhaps all three, setting the stage for a future filled with possibility and promise.
