What was Sam Childers' profession before his transformation?
The film follows Sam Childers (Gerard Butler) as he embarks on a transformative journey that begins in a war-torn South Sudan, where the LRA is wreaking havoc on innocent villagers. Initially, Sam is portrayed as a rough, alcoholic biker from Pennsylvania with a troubled past. Upon his release from prison, he discovers that his wife, Lynn (Michelle Monaghan), has turned her life around and embraced Christianity, leaving her former occupation as a stripper behind.
After a tense moment where he nearly causes harm to a stranger, Sam finds his way to church, spurred on by Lynn’s encouragement, and experience a profound conversion. He rebuilds his life, working hard as a construction worker and earning respect in his trade. When a tornado devastates his community, he seizes the opportunity to start his own construction business, leading his family to a much-improved home, far from their previous trailer park.
An encounter with a Ugandan priest at his church inspires Sam to volunteer for construction work in Uganda. What starts as a brief mission soon escalates when he insists on traveling north to Sudan, despite warnings of the war zone conditions. There, they arrive at a medical tent where a red-headed doctor ropes him into assisting with a Sudanese woman in dire need of attention.
The night is marked by the sight of numerous Sudanese children seeking refuge outside the relief station. Their parents, fearing for the safety of their children, send them there for a night of safety. Sam, touched by their plight, brings the children into the station to rest. However, the following day reveals a tragic scene as they return to discover the LRA has decimated the children’s village, leaving behind chaos and devastation. The horror continues with the death of a child who steps on a landmine while chasing after a dog.
Haunted by these experiences, Sam returns to the U.S. but feels compelled to go back to Sudan to build an orphanage for the children orphaned by the violence. After its completion, tragedy strikes again when the LRA destroys the orphanage. In a desperate phone call to Lynn, she reminds him not to give up hope, as the children he helps have faced greater adversities.
As Sam gains recognition as the “white preacher” in Sudan, he embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue vulnerable children from the LRA. After the orphanage is rebuilt, however, they face a violent attack again. Sam’s efforts are met with challenges as he struggles to fund his mission, liquidating his resources and even selling his business to keep the orphanage afloat.
Throughout all the chaos, Sam’s emotional rollercoaster intensifies as he confronts frustrations with his supporters in the SPLA. It takes a young orphan to bring him back to a sense of purpose, reigniting his dedication to fighting against the LRA. The film concludes with an emotional tribute, featuring real black-and-white photographs of Sam, Lynn, and their daughter alongside the orphanage, accompanied by a home video clip where Sam discusses his important work, all while the credits roll.
