Starring Oscar Isaac and Garrett Hedlund, the film follows Tom, a successful Hollywood film director who is coming down from an all-night party and a long night of heavy drinking. The morning finds his girlfriend still asleep as he seeks solitude, hoping the quiet desert will cure the restlessness that plagues him. In search of solitude and space, he climbs into his jeep and heads for the open expanse, hoping the miles will help him reset.
In the barren glow of the desert, an unexpected and dangerous encounter interrupts his retreat: a homicidal drifter named John “Jack” Jackson appears, turning Tom’s retreat into a tense game of cat and mouse. Jack’s presence is chilling, and his motives feel murky from the start. What begins as a confrontation escalates quicky as Jack visits Tom’s camp at night, testing Tom’s nerve and resolve. Tom, trained to handle danger, fights back with a small retractable knife, while Jack remains armed with a Bowie knife tucked inside his coat. Tom manages to overpower him and force him away, but the encounter leaves a hollow impression on the landscape and on Tom’s sense of control.
The desert offers no real refuge. The following day, Tom’s jeep has overturned, cutting him off from a quick return to Los Angeles. He spends the night in a cave, the desert’s silence amplifying his fears. When a figure appears at the cave’s mouth, Tom fires, assuming it’s Jack returning for another confrontation. The result is a fatal misstep: he has killed a patrolling police officer standing in for the threat he imagined. In a bid to steer blame away from himself, Tom leaves the scene with Jack’s rifle—or so he plans—an act meant to suggest that Jack is the killer. The actual chain of evidence becomes tangled as Jack, who discovers Tom’s abandoned jeep and a car registration with Tom’s name and address, heads back toward Los Angeles with something far more dangerous than a gun: the knowledge of Tom’s past misdeeds.
Back in the city, Jack begins to press his leverage. He confronts Tom, using the car registration as leverage and testing whether Tom’s computed deceptions will hold. Tom rejects Jack’s blackmail demand, and the tension mounts as Jack escalates his scheme by killing a movie executive named Norman to frame Tom for the crime, a move designed to mirror Tom’s earlier manipulation in the desert.
The confrontation shifts back to the desert, where the two men agree to settle their dispute with a deadly, high-stakes game. Jack proposes a game of Russian roulette. In a brutal twist, Tom grabs the gun and fires, discovering that all the chambers were loaded. The lethal math is brutal, and the desert becomes a silent witness to the end of one plan and the exposure of another. Tom then sets Jack and his trailer ablaze, leaving behind a trail of smoke and the echo of their duel.
In the aftermath, a final, intimate moment softens the grim intensity: Tom returns to a quiet moment with his little girl, who has been away, and shares a kiss that suggests the fragile, complicated balance of his life—one foot in his career and the other in a family he barely keeps intact. The desert may have stripped away his pretenses, but it also crystallizes the price of his choices and the fragile line between truth and deceit.
