In February 1966, during a perilous combat mission, Lieutenant Dieter Dengler, a German-born U.S. Navy pilot in squadron VA-145, finds himself in a life-or-death situation when he is shot down over Laos while piloting his Douglas A-1 Skyraider from the carrier USS Ranger. Surviving the crash, Dengler is swiftly captured by the Pathet Lao. Presented with an opportunity for leniency by the provincial governor, he is asked to sign a damning document against America—an offer he staunchly rejects, which results in his brutal torture and subsequent imprisonment in a harsh prisoner of war camp.

There, Dengler meets his fellow captives, including American pilots Gene DeBruin and Duane W. Martin, Hong Kong Chinese radio operator Y.C. To, and Thai Air America employee Phisit Intharathat. As they endure the harsh realities of malnutrition and the oppressive cruelty of the guards, Dengler launches an audacious escape plan, though he struggles to gain full support from his fellow prisoners.

As food supplies dwindle even further, the prisoners learn that the starving guards are planning to execute them and return home. Realizing they are facing obliteration, they reluctantly join forces to execute Dengler’s meticulously devised escape strategy. This dangerous plan involves navigating a weakened section of the perimeter fence, splitting into two groups, and mounting a coordinated assault on the guard hut during lunch hour to overpower their captors and call for help from American forces.

However, due to insubordination from one group, the escape unfolds chaotically, resulting in the shooting of nearly all the guards. The lack of adequate equipment and supplies forces the prisoners to disperse into the unforgiving jungle. Dengler and Martin band together, while Gene and To face an uncertain future apart.

With a dangerous mission in mind, Dengler and Martin attempt to reach the Mekong River, envisioning a way to cross into Thailand by crafting a primitive raft. As they navigate treacherous rapids and a waterfall, Martin’s condition deteriorates under the strain of their ordeal. After failing to signal an American helicopter, Dengler and Martin stumble into a hostile village, where tragedy strikes as the villagers brutally decapitate Martin.

Dengler narrowly escapes, evading the enraged villagers while seeking refuge in the dense jungle. Days later, he finally receives a lifeline when an American helicopter arrives to rescue him. Taken to a hospital within a U.S. compound, he remains isolated due to the classified nature of his mission. Eventually, he is reunited with his squadron members who arrange for his return to the ship, where he is celebrated as a hero by the crew.
