Plot Summary

As the opening credits unfold, a tapestry of news reports and politicians’ declarations regarding North Korea is woven together with the title of the film, setting the stage for a gripping narrative.

In Spokane, Washington, a high school football game unfolds, where Matt Eckert (Josh Peck) takes to the field as quarterback. His overconfidence leads his team to defeat, despite the coach’s pleas for more passing plays. As the final whistle blows, Matt is picked up by his girlfriend Erica (Isabel Lucas), a cheerleader, and they head out to a party that night.

The evening’s festivities are suddenly interrupted when the power goes out, plunging the gathering into darkness. Unbeknownst to the revelers, this unexpected blackout is merely a harbinger of the chaos to come. Meanwhile, back at the Eckert residence, Tom (Brett Cullen) returns home to find his son Jed (Chris Hemsworth), a mysterious figure shrouded in secrecy.

The next morning brings an eerie silence, punctuated only by the distant rumble of thunder. As the brothers Matt and Jed begin their day, they’re met with an unsettling sight: items around the house are toppled, as if some unseen force has stirred up the surroundings. The sound grows louder, and the brothers rush outside to investigate. Looking up, they behold a fleet of massive aircraft, soldiers parachuting down from the sky.

One plane is intercepted by a ground-to-air missile, crashing into a nearby residence. As panic sets in, Tom, a local police officer, arrives on the scene, urging his sons to flee towards their secluded cabin in the mountains. As they speed away, they’re pursued by a stray paratrooper who opens fire; however, the Eckerts manage to outmaneuver him.

Tom instructs his sons to leave the chaos behind and make for the safety of their mountain retreat, while he stays back to assist the townspeople. Initially hesitant, Matt and Jed soon comply, speeding off into the unknown as the world around them descends into turmoil.

As the Eckert brothers’ desperate bid to rescue Erica (name omitted) reaches its climax, they’re confronted by the stark reality of their invaders: North Korean troops, identifiable by the insignia on their uniforms. The siblings’ pursuit is thwarted as other military vehicles spot them, rendering their attempts to save Erica futile. In a last-ditch effort, they regroup with a few fellow escapees, including schoolmates Robert (Josh Hutcherson) and Daryl (Connor Cruise), who join forces in another vehicle. They make haste for the cabin, scrambling to gather essential supplies as they go.

Nightfall brings an unexpected visitor: a non-military vehicle drives by, prompting Jed to take point with a rifle at the ready, just in case. Pete (Steve Lenz) joins him, brandishing a handgun he’d found earlier, and nearly hits Jed in the process. Jed intervenes, confiscating the weapon when Pete refuses to relinquish it.

The next morning, they’re met with a jarring discovery: Pete has absconded with their food supplies. In a hasty departure, they gather what’s left and set out into the unknown. As they scout their surroundings, eerie sounds and the faint glow of lights signal the presence of Captain Cho (Will Yun Lee), a North Korean officer, accompanied by soldiers. Unbeknownst to them, Pete had betrayed their trust, revealing their location.

Captain Cho uses Tom and Daryl’s fathers as pawns in a macabre game, luring the brothers out from the woods. When Tom’s sons are ordered to take down the traitor, Captain Cho takes aim at Tom, felling him with a shot that sets the cabin ablaze. The group’s grief is palpable, but Jed rallies them, emphasizing their determination to turn the tables and wreak havoc among their invaders using guerrilla tactics.

Their initial raid unfolds with Toni (Adrianne Palicki) as bait. She approaches a checkpoint, feigning flight before ducking away, prompting soldiers to give chase. Seizing the opportunity, the rest of the group rises from cover, raking the soldiers with gunfire. As they claim their fallen foes’ gear and weapons, they vanish into the woods, establishing a new makeshift base camp.

As the days unfold, the dynamic duo of Matt and Erica ignite a powder keg of chaos among their North Korean invaders. Utilizing pilfered C4 and small arms, they orchestrate a series of daring attacks on military checkpoints, leaving destruction in their wake. Proclaiming themselves the Wolverines, inspired by their high school mascot, their exploits soon spread like wildfire, inspiring others to rise up against their oppressors.

At a pivotal outdoor gathering, where North Korean officials are attempting to quell the remaining townspeople with promises of cooperation and collaboration, the Wolverines are poised to strike. Matt’s eyes scan the crowd until they land on Erica, now a prisoner, being transported away in a school bus. Seizing the opportunity, he triggers the explosives early, freeing her from captivity amidst the ensuing pandemonium. The pair makes their escape, but not without one of their comrades falling victim to enemy fire.

Jed’s ire is piqued by Matt’s defiance, which puts the entire group at risk. Matt flees, leaving Jed to stew in frustration. However, after several days have passed, Jed seeks out Matt for a heart-to-heart reconciliation, during which Matt accuses him of abandoning their family six years prior when their mother passed away. Jed confesses that he was lost and searching for himself, but ultimately acknowledges his mistakes and the need for their bond now more than ever.

Meanwhile, in Spokane, Cho’s office is stormed by a high-ranking North Korean military officer, furious at the failure to contain the Wolverines’ activities. Cho calmly reveals a plan to turn the tables on their oppressors.

As the Wolverines regroup in their hideout, they are suddenly forced to scatter when enemy jets level a large swath of the woods, leaving two more comrades fallen and their shelter in ruins. The group is decimated, with only Matt, Jed, Toni, Erica, Robert, and Daryl remaining. In the midst of this devastation, they encounter three American military personnel, led by the enigmatic Tanner (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who just so happen to be searching for the Wolverines.

As the flames of the campfire danced across their faces, a sense of urgency and determination washed over the ragtag group of survivors. It dawned on them that both factions had independently converged upon the same crucial conclusion: the ever-present briefcase carried by Cho held the key to the invaders’ plans, and it must be seized at all costs. With this newfound understanding, they launched a daring raid on the local police station, now serving as a makeshift stronghold for the enemy forces. In the ensuing chaos, Jed and his comrades managed to take down a significant number of soldiers, their adrenaline-fueled assault yielding impressive results.

As Daryl made a break for freedom, he found himself caught in the crossfire and brutally stabbed by a group of ruthless Russian operatives. Miraculously, he managed to escape with his life, though not without sustaining grievous injuries. Meanwhile, Jed engaged Cho in a fierce battle, their struggle culminating in a dramatic showdown within the precinct’s command center – Cho’s father’s very office, no less. The tables turned as Jed ducked beneath the desk, only to emerge with a gun hidden within a cleverly concealed compartment. With calculated precision, he dispatched Cho, leaving him writhing in agony on the floor.

In the aftermath of this intense skirmish, Matt seized the opportunity to recover the coveted briefcase from a fallen comrade, rejoining Jed as they made a hasty retreat. They sought refuge in a dilapidated abode, where Jed finally acknowledged his brother’s bravery, bestowing upon him a well-deserved beer – a moment of rare candor between the two siblings.

However, their fragile sense of security was shattered when Toni appeared, her smile belied by the beer she held in hand. Jed’s attention was abruptly drawn to her as he strode down the hallway, only to be met with a hail of bullets. The invaders had tracked them down, and Jed fell victim to their merciless onslaught.

Matt’s frantic cries for everyone to take cover were answered as they scrambled to escape, piling into a vehicle that sped away from the carnage. They paused momentarily in the woods, reassessing their situation and piecing together the puzzle of their predicament. It became clear that Daryl’s injuries were not the only consequence of the battle – a tracking device, cleverly implanted by the Russians during his earlier capture, now guided the enemy forces straight to their doorstep.

Confronted with this stark reality, Daryl made the selfless decision to remain behind, armed with nothing but his trusty rifle as the others vanished into the night. The weight of his sacrifice hung heavy in the air as they disappeared from view, leaving him to face the music alone.

As the helicopter lifts off into the sky, a poignant tableau unfolds on the ground below. The remaining Wolverines, their faces etched with determination, stand alongside American military personnel as they prepare to transport the valuable briefcase away from the war-torn zone. Tanner, ever the leader, extends an olive branch of sorts to his comrades-in-arms, inviting them to join forces and leave the battle-scarred landscape behind. However, Matt’s unwavering resolve proves unshakeable, and he declines the offer with a quiet conviction that echoes the sentiments of his fallen brother.

Meanwhile, as night falls, Matt ascends to a makeshift podium atop a vehicle, his voice carrying on the wind like a clarion call to action. With an intensity that borders on fervor, he delivers an impassioned speech, echoing the stirring words of his sibling, and inspires a new wave of rebels to take up arms against their oppressors.

Under the cover of darkness, the Wolverines launch a daring assault on the detention center where enemy forces are holding captives. Armed to the teeth and fueled by righteous indignation, they storm the facility in jeeps and vehicles, the sound of gunfire and chaos erupting as the people begin to shout defiance at their oppressors.

As the dust settles, the camera pans out to reveal a sea of freedom fighters charging forward, an American flag fluttering valiantly in the breeze like a beacon of hope amidst the chaos. The final shot is one of unbridled triumph, the Wolverines’ unwavering spirit and determination having sparked a revolution that will not be silenced.
