Plot Summary

In the vibrant streets of London, Rocks (a bright-eyed teenager) shares a humble abode with her younger brother Emmanuel and their devoted single mother. Her life is a tapestry woven from threads of friendship, love, and resilience. A sudden arrival at school sets off a chain reaction: Roché, a rebellious newcomer, takes an inexplicable liking to Rocks, much to the dismay of her close-knit circle of friends.

As fate would have it, Rocks’ mother departs without warning, leaving behind only a heartfelt letter promising her return and a meager sum of money. Rocks is torn between secrecy and vulnerability, confiding in her trusted friend Sumaya about their dire situation. When confronted by the harsh reality of being alone with her brother, Rocks turns to Sumaya’s family for temporary shelter.

The warmth of Sumaya’s home serves as a stark contrast to Rocks’ own circumstances, sparking an argument between the two friends. Rocks’ resentment towards Sumaya’s seemingly perfect life boils over, and she vehemently asserts her independence, refusing any offer of help. As tensions simmer, Rocks begins to drift away from her friends, instead finding solace in Roché’s company.

In a shocking revelation, Rocks discovers that Roché has been generating income through fraudulent means at her step-mom’s salon. Seizing the opportunity, Rocks pilfers some cash and uses it to rent a hotel room for herself and Emmanuel, concocting a convincing lie about being their mother. However, Roché soon catches on and publically shames Rocks, exposing her family’s struggles to the entire student body.

The consequences of Rocks’ actions are swift and severe: the hotel staff, now aware of her true identity, evicts her and Emmanuel. With nowhere else to turn, Rocks reluctantly accepts Agnes’ offer of shelter for the night. But when she awakens the next morning, she’s met with a devastating sight: social workers have taken away her brother, after Agnes’ mother reported their situation to authorities.

Confronted by the harsh realities of her situation, Rocks is forced to confront the possibility of entering the foster care system alongside her brother. With a heavy heart and a determination to protect her loved ones, Rocks reluctantly agrees to join Emmanuel and surrender to the social workers, marking the beginning of an uncertain and tumultuous journey.

As fate would have it, Rocks finds herself in a new foster home in London, a world away from her dear friend Emmanuel, who has been relocated to a humble abode in Hastings. Despite the physical distance between them, Rocks’ desire to reconnect with her companion burns bright. With the help of her friends, she orchestrates an elaborate plan to surprise Emmanuel on his special day - a birthday celebration that requires nothing short of a train ride from London to Hastings. But as Rocks finally sets eyes on her friend in their seaside destination, she’s met with a jarring reality: Emmanuel is thriving in his new environment, and the thought of disrupting this newfound happiness proves too great for Rocks’ heart to bear. As the sun dips into the horizon, Rocks and her friends surrender to the serenity of the beach, their joyful laughter and playful antics marking the film’s poignant conclusion.
