Settlers Quiz: Test your knowledge about the Martian settlement and its inhabitants.

What is the main occupation of Reza and Ilsa in their Martian settlement?

Plot Summary

In the desolate yet eerily idyllic Martian settlement, Reza (Jonny Lee Miller), a middle-aged patriarch, coexists with his wife Ilsa (Sofia Boutella) and their precocious 9-year-old daughter Remmy (Brooklynn Prince). This self-sufficient haven, comprising a poultry farm and greenhouse garden, is the family’s sanctuary from the harsh Martian environment. Remmy’s insatiable curiosity often puts her at odds with her mother, who seems determined to keep her grounded in their isolated world.

The tranquility of their existence is shattered when they stumble upon a disturbing message scrawled on their kitchen windowpane: “LEAVE”. This ominous warning sends shockwaves through the family, and Reza and Ilsa’s hushed conversations hint at a deeper understanding of this mysterious threat. However, before any answers can be forthcoming, three khaki-clad rangers descend upon the settlement, prompting Reza to take matters into his own hands and depart to deal with the intruders.

As the days tick by, Ilsa and Remmy are consumed by worry, awaiting Reza’s return. But instead of their patriarch, a strange and menacing figure appears at their doorstep - Jerry (Ismael Cruz Córdova), a ranger with a vendetta against them. According to Jerry, Reza and Ilsa have taken over his family’s home and brutally murdered his parents.

As tensions escalate, Ilsa finally breaks her silence, revealing the truth behind their arrival on Mars. They were refugees from Earth, forced to abandon their planet when their transport system malfunctioned. When they arrived at this settlement, Jerry’s father took them in, but his discovery of Ilsa’s pregnancy and their connection to Earth sparked a deadly confrontation. In self-defense, Ilsa was left with no choice but to take drastic measures, forever changing the dynamics of their new home.

As Jerry’s intentions unfolded like a dark puzzle, he may have taken out Reza before ever setting foot inside Ilsa’s home, a speculation that would haunt the unfolding narrative. Jerry then issued an ultimatum to Ilsa and her young daughter Remmy: thirty days to prove his worth as a member of their family unit. Over time, Ilsa’s icy demeanor seemed to thaw, but just as Jerry thought he was making progress, she attempted to eliminate him with gunfire. However, Jerry had anticipated this move, having deliberately emptied the magazine before the confrontation. In the ensuing struggle, Jerry took Ilsa’s life, leaving only despair and desperation in his wake.

As the years passed, Remmy grew into a young woman, her resentment towards Jerry festering like an open wound. She found solace in “Steve,” a robot she had discovered in a storage unit, and together they would often venture to the edge of their isolated settlement. It was there that Remmy stumbled upon the truth: the area beyond the transparent glass-like atmosphere was inaccessible without a metallic chamber, but with the right equipment, she could survive the unforgiving environment.

But Remmy’s desire for freedom and exploration was tempered by her deep-seated anger towards Jerry, the man who had taken her family from her. She struggled to reconcile her feelings, torn between a longing for independence and a revulsion towards the man who had become her guardian. Jerry, meanwhile, seemed driven by a primal urge to ensure his own lineage continued, his focus fixated on Remmy as the only viable option.

As the tension between them mounted, Jerry’s actions became increasingly desperate. He burned all the oxygen masks in the settlement, effectively trapping everyone within its confines. But Remmy had secretly hidden one away, and when Jerry discovered her deceit, he responded with brutal force, attempting to assault and rape her while she was bound to a bed. However, Steve intervened once more, blasting Jerry in the neck with its power-drilling attachment. Free from her restraints, Remmy exacted a devastating revenge, ending Jerry’s reign of terror with a well-placed gunshot.

As Remmy’s extraordinary skillset enables her to revive the Robot, she orchestrates a meticulous reconstruction process, breathing new life into the mechanical being. Furthermore, she crafts a vital oxygen mask, ensuring her own survival in the harsh environment. With the settlement secured under the Robot’s watchful “eye,” Remmy makes a bold decision to depart, leaving behind the familiar surroundings of home. Utilizing the underground chamber as a gateway to the unknown, she embarks on an extraordinary journey across the atmospheric divide, driven by an insatiable curiosity to explore uncharted territories and encounter novel human connections - should her quest prove successful against all odds.
