Plot Summary

As the new academic year commences at Kitauji High School, Kumiko Ōmae (character) finds herself immersed in a whirlwind of excitement and uncertainty as she begins her second year amidst the vibrant atmosphere of the school’s concert band. The arrival of fresh faces - first-year students Kanade Hisaishi, Mirei Suzuki, Satsuki Suzuki, and Motomu Tsukinaga - brings with it a sense of novelty and energy to the group. Under the guidance of Yūko Yoshikawa, the band’s president, Kumiko is tasked alongside Tomoe Kabe to mentor the newcomers and set their sights on winning the coveted gold at the national concert band competition. As the team embarks on this ambitious journey, Kumiko notices a palpable divide between the seasoned upperclassmen and the eager new recruits.

The Sunrise Festival serves as a pivotal moment in the band’s development, as Mirei Suzuki becomes disillusioned with what she perceives as frivolous behavior among her senior counterparts. Kumiko, accompanied by Kanade Hisaishi, convinces Mirei to reconsider her decision, ultimately paving the way for the Kitauji High School Concert Band to shine at the festival.

As the band’s practices intensify, Noboru Taki reveals the designated piece for the national competition - “March Sky Blue Dream” - alongside a free piece and an upcoming audition. Kumiko finds herself juggling her responsibilities as a musician with her personal life, accompanying her boyfriend Shūichi Tsukamoto to a prefectural festival and later conferring with Reina Kōsaka about their shared anxieties regarding the impending third year of high school.

Meanwhile, Tomoe Kabe announces her withdrawal from the competition, opting instead to focus on managing the band. She shares with Kumiko her struggles with inflammation in her temporomandibular joints, which has compelled her to reevaluate her role within the group. As tensions simmer beneath the surface, Kanade confides in Kumiko about her frustrations with Natsuki Nakagawa, who has been seeking her assistance despite their vast age gap.

The day of the audition arrives, and Natsuki’s observant nature detects Kanade’s apparent lack of enthusiasm. In a heated exchange, Kanade reveals her reluctance to participate, citing her desire to cede the spotlight to Natsuki as the latter prepares to graduate. Kumiko intervenes, drawing upon Kanade’s past experiences with senior mentors in middle school to help her find closure. The audition concludes with Kumiko, Kanade, and Natsuki emerging victorious, their bond strengthened by the trials they have faced together.

As the Kitauji High School Concert Band embarks on a journey of self-discovery under the watchful eyes of their instructors, Mr. Taki (Masahiro Hashimoto), Satomi Nīyama, and Masahiro Hashimoto himself, they find themselves at a pivotal crossroads. In a bold move, Kumiko and Shūichi mutually decide to part ways, opting instead to channel their energies into the band’s growth and development. The stakes are higher than ever as the competition heats up, culminating in the Kansai band competition where alumni Kaori Nakaseko, Haruka Ogasawara, and Asuka Tanaka make a triumphant return to cheer on Kitauji High School Concert Band. However, despite their valiant efforts, they fall short of their national ambitions, earning a disappointing dud gold medal instead. The bitter taste of defeat lingers as the band’s leaders regroup and reassess their strategy. In a poignant coda, Kanade extends a warm welcome to Kumiko, now proudly serving as the band’s president, marking a new chapter in her musical journey.
