What unique ability does Jake possess?
In an unremarkable Chicago neighborhood, Tom Witzky (played by Kevin Bacon) leads a seemingly typical life with his expectant wife, Maggie. Unknown to Tom and Maggie, their son Jake possesses a remarkable gift — the ability to speak with the dead. This extraordinary talent sets Jake apart from others in ways that will soon unfold. During a casual family gathering, Tom challenges his sister-in-law Lisa (Lisa), a strong believer in the supernatural, to hypnotize him. Lisa’s successful hypnosis plants a hidden post-hypnotic suggestion in Tom, encouraging him to adopt a more receptive attitude. This newfound mindset leads Tom to experience vivid, haunting visions connected to the disappearance of Samantha Kozac, a 17-year-old girl who went missing six months earlier in their neighborhood.
As Tom and Maggie enjoy a local high-school football game, Jake is entrusted to the care of baby-sitter Debbie. However, unbeknownst to them, Debbie inadvertently overhears Jake speaking to Samantha’s spirit, which triggers her panic. In a flurry, she takes Jake and runs away into the dark. Suddenly faced with the realization that Jake is in danger, Tom is beset by unsettling flashes of crimson light that lead him toward the Metra station, where he finds Debbie in a worried conversation with her mother about Jake’s absence.
The confrontation intensifies when Tom and Maggie question Debbie, now accompanied by a police officer. Debbie grows defensive as she begins to interrogate them about Samantha, revealing shocking information. Samantha, as it turns out, had an intellectual disability, akin to that of an 8-year-old child, making her susceptible to trusting strangers. This startling revelation captivates Tom, igniting his determination to uncover the truth behind Samantha’s mysterious disappearance. He reaches out to his neighbors, including Harry Damon (Harry Damon) and his close friend Frank McCarthy (Frank McCarthy), as well as their sons Kurt Damon (Kurt Damon) and Adam McCarthy (Adam McCarthy). However, they dismiss Samantha as merely a rebellious teenager. Just then, Tom receives another ominous vision, where Frank warns him, > “they’re going to kill you and Maggie both.” This dire message sends Tom spiraling into a state of urgency when tragedy strikes — Adam takes his own life in Frank’s home, leaving behind a grievously injured legacy.
Amidst Jake and Maggie’s peaceful stroll through their neighborhood, they stumble upon a funeral attended by Chicago police officers. Noticing Jake’s unusual ability, Neil, one of the officers, invites Tom to a gathering with others who share similar abilities. With curiosity piqued, Maggie decides to attend. At the meeting, Neil reveals a chilling truth — the spirit communicating with Tom has a pressing demand that must be addressed, or it will manifest as an escalating frustration. As Tom’s connection with Samantha grows heavier, he becomes increasingly drained and sleepless, tormented by cryptic messages urging him to search for answers.
In a frenzied state, Tom tears apart his backyard in a desperate need to uncover what Samantha wants. Meanwhile, as Maggie and Jake pay their respects at her grandmother’s memorial service, Tom’s frantic excavation unexpectedly unearths the horrifying remains of Samantha hidden beneath a deconstructed brick wall in the dim basement. This gruesome revelation sends Tom into a vision of the past, unveiling the tragic event where Adam and Kurt maliciously led Samantha into their home, resulting in her untimely death during a struggle.
Upon sharing his shocking discovery with Frank, the emotional weight of the truth causes Frank to collapse in despair, desperate for solitude. The tension escalates once Harry and Kurt confront Tom, their motives sinister. Maggie bravely intervenes but is taken hostage. Suddenly, Frank reappears, shooting Harry and Kurt in a split-second decision. As the confrontation resolves, Tom notices that Samantha’s spirit finally finds peace and begins to dissipate into the ether. In the aftermath, the family makes a fresh start, abandoning the haunted house that bore witness to their harrowing past.
As Jake attempts to drown out the haunting whispers of lingering spirits around their new home, the family steps into their new residence, acutely aware of the weight of supernatural energies that linger in their wake.
