Spot has spent the last year living as Scott, a pretend boy, while attending school with Leonard Helperman. This unusual arrangement lets the dog share in ordinary kid-life, but Spot’s deepest wish is to become a real human boy. Leonard, on the other hand, just wants a normal dog and a quiet life, which often brings them into conflict. When Leonard’s mother, Mary Lou, is invited to Florida to compete in the Teacher of the Year finals, the family secures permission to travel in the school principal’s RV, on the understanding that no dogs are allowed aboard. The situation grows more complicated when Spot’s longing for humanity clashes with the practical realities of Leonard’s world, and a bittersweet goodbye to Spot feels like the only option as they head toward the trip.

On a televised talk show, Spot discovers Dr. Ivan Krank, a scientist who claims he can turn animals into human beings. The promise shines with the glitter of a breakthrough, and Spot becomes determined to meet Krank in Sunny Southern Florida. He sneaks onto the RV and, in a bold move, disguises himself as Scott to convince Mrs. Helperman to let him come along. Back home, Pretty Boy the bird and Mr. Jolly the cat catch a glimpse of Krank’s claims from a follow-up TV episode and realize the danger: Krank doesn’t truly turn animals into people in a humane way, but rather into awkward, grotesque hybrids. The duo vows to follow Spot and warn him, insisting that even small helpers can make a big difference.

The family arrives in Florida, and Mrs. Helperman heads straight to the Teacher of the Year finals, leaving the two boys to their own devices. Spot persuades Leonard to accompany him to Krank’s laboratory, and though Leonard is wary, Krank agrees to try turning Spot into a human, hoping the scientific world will finally recognize him. When Spot awakens, he is indeed a human—but the aging process works in an unusual way: dogs age faster than people, so Spot has become a fully grown man rather than a boy. Krank, thrilled by the prospect of fame and prestige, plans to capture and exhibit the “dog-man” to audiences around the world. Spot and Leonard manage to break free, and the two of them set out into the town to figure out what comes next.

With money in hand, Scott uses his canine instincts to locate a missing dog and claim a cash reward, and he and Leonard enjoy a day exploring the city. They return to the RV with a new, carefully crafted story to explain the disappearance of Scott the boy and the appearance of Scott the man. Mrs. Helperman, drawn to the charismatic stranger who seems to care for her son, invites Scott in for coffee, and a fond, complicated romance begins to blossom. Scott contemplates a future where he could marry Mary Lou so that the whole family could stay together, but Leonard balks at the idea and refuses to allow it. In a moment of anger, Scott declares that he is no longer Leonard’s dog, and Leonard, feeling betrayed, takes back his tags and collar.

Seeing the rift, the other pets arrive in Florida and urge Leonard to support Scott’s dream. This makes Leonard realize that their bond can still be strong if he steps back and allows Spot to pursue what he desires most. He decides that the only way for everyone to be together again is for him to become Scott’s dog, and with a heavy heart he heads toward Krank’s lab. Scott, feeling regret, returns to reconcile with Leonard and follows him.

Krank’s plan then shifts toward turning Leonard into a dog and capturing Scott so the two can be displayed side by side for maximum shock value. Scott races to Krank’s lab, where he confronts the machine and destroys it, triggering chaos. In the aftermath, Krank is transformed into a mouse, and Scott reverts to his original dog form. The chaos settles, and the reunion between Leonard and Spot is sealed. In the end, Spot makes a quiet, contented choice: he is proud to be a dog, and the bond he shares with Leonard—and the rest of their family—remains the true center of their lives.
