What is the main task that Jack is assigned by Robert Dragna?

Plot Summary

In a peculiar arrangement, elderly gangster Robert Dragna (Robert Dragna) instructs professional killer Jack to retrieve a mysterious package and wait for his arrival at a motel. The task seems straightforward: simply pick up the bag and keep it under wraps until Dragna arrives. However, when Jack presses Dragna for more information, the latter’s responses are evasive, leaving the killer bewildered by the lack of clarity. To make matters worse, when Jack does acquire the package, he is met with a sudden and unprovoked attack from one of Dragna’s henchmen, which results in the assassin killing his assailant and stashing the body in the trunk of his car.

Upon arriving at the motel, Jack encounters an assortment of eccentric characters, including Ned, a desk clerk confined to a wheelchair; Rivka, a statuesque prostitute with an air of mystery surrounding her; and Lizard and Guano, two bald men perpetually agitated about something. When Jack requests room 13, Ned cautions him about the notorious deathtrap status of this particular room, which is disconnected from all others. Undeterred, Jack presses on, only to be driven by a sudden, unexplained impulse to burst into the room of two unsuspecting suited men and eliminate them without provocation.

A subsequent search yields an unexpected surprise: FBI badges and a briefcase. As Jack’s anxiety grows, he becomes increasingly paranoid about the contents of the package, which could potentially incriminate him. His initial plan to dispose of the bodies in his car goes awry when Rivka discovers the corpses, sparking her growing unease. Her concerns are further exacerbated by the presence of Lizard and Guano, who seem hell-bent on causing trouble.

As Jack’s situation becomes increasingly precarious, he finds himself questioning Rivka about her involvement with Dragna and the mysterious package. Her enigmatic responses only serve to deepen his uncertainty. When Lizard and Guano launch a surprise attack on Jack during their journey, they meet their untimely demise at his hands. As the dust settles, Jack is left grappling with the consequences of his actions, unsure what to do with Rivka or how to proceed in light of Dragna’s expected arrival.

As Ned’s suspicions about Jack’s clandestine activities in his room continue to simmer, he decides to involve Sheriff Larson, whose brief questioning of Jack only serves to further inflame the situation. With tensions running high, Jack resorts to desperate measures, hastily interring the bag - now a focal point of concern - near the motel’s carpark. However, Ned, who has recently undergone a transformation, emerging from his wheelchair, catches wind of the clandestine operation and confronts Jack. The ensuing confrontation culminates in Ned’s untimely demise at Jack’s hands.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Larson, now fueled by a sense of injustice, arrests Jack on suspicion of Ned’s disappearance - an accusation that raises eyebrows due to the remarkably brief duration of Ned’s vanishing act. As Larson readies to exact information from his captive, Rivka suddenly appears, prompting Larson to threaten her with a horrific fate. However, she proves more than a match for the deputy, freeing Jack in the process.

As Jack and Rivka reunite, they are met with a mixture of suspicion and gratitude, as Rivka’s timely intervention has spared Jack’s life. Nevertheless, Jack’s initial mistrust gives way to growing unease when Rivka reveals an intimate familiarity with the contents of the bag. It becomes clear that this enigmatic figure is not merely a bystander but an integral player in the unfolding drama.

As tensions escalate, Jack finds himself at the mercy of Dragna, who has been conducting a covert test of his resolve and character. With the motel’s staff and local authorities unwittingly complicit in the experiment, Jack must navigate this treacherous landscape to uncover the truth behind Dragna’s true intentions. The revelation that the bag holds a dark secret - one that could change the course of Jack’s life forever - sets the stage for a catastrophic confrontation.

As the stakes grow higher, Rivka, now revealed as Dragna’s mistress and personal assassin, seizes control of the narrative, manipulating events to ensure her employer’s goals are met. With Jack’s life hanging in the balance, Rivka’s machinations culminate in a heart-stopping climax that pits Jack against his nemesis, with the very fate of their twisted relationship hanging precariously in the balance.

In the aftermath of this intense struggle, Rivka’s true allegiance is finally exposed, as she claims the reward for Jack’s assassination and sets off into the sunset with her former mark-turned-ally, leaving behind a trail of destruction and deceit.
