The Collector 2009

The film opens in the dead of night with Larry and Gena Wharton, who have just returned home after a night of drinking. As Gena heads upstairs, Larry stays behind to sort through some mail, only to find that the lights have mysteriously failed. Hearing Gena call out to him, he rushes up to the bedroom, where they discover a puzzling big red box positioned ominously in their room, marked with a note indicating it’s for collection. Suddenly, the box moves, and when Larry opens it, his horror unfolds as a hand shoots out, grabbing him.

Following the opening credits, we shift our focus to another house undergoing renovation. Among the workers is Arkin, portrayed by Josh Stewart, who interacts with the homeowners, Michael and Victoria (played by Andrea Roth), talking about upgrading their home’s security. Michael generously offers extra payment for Arkin’s daughter, reminding him how quickly children grow up, especially during their teenage years. Grateful, Arkin drives away, yet enters into a dilemma at home when his wife reveals she owes money to loan sharks and plans to escape with their daughter, Cindy. Determined to help, Arkin promises to get the funds required by midnight.

In desperation, Arkin reaches out to Roy, a shady figure from his past who he had helped while incarcerated. They meet at a seedy strip club, where Arkin reveals his plan to rob Michael’s house, leveraging the fact that the family is away and that a valuable jewel awaits him in the safe. Roy reluctantly acquiesces, allowing Arkin to execute his plan.

As he navigates through the house, he heads upstairs to access the safe hidden behind a mirror, unaware that danger lurks nearby; The Collector, a masked figure played by Juan Fernández, secures the back door and ascends to the upper level, leading Arkin to hide just in time.

As the tension escalates, Arkin discovers Michael, beaten and bleeding from a brutal encounter with The Collector, and learns that the entire family is at risk. Without hesitation, Arkin tries to engage with the 911 services but is thwarted by a concealed spike in the phone, leaving him desperate as he strategically maneuvers through the bear traps and razor wires strewn across the house.

Things spiral further south when Arkin uncovers Victoria, trapped and gagged in the bathtub, and confronts the horrific reality of their situation. He realizes that the house is laden with intricate traps designed to catch the unsuspecting. His attempts to rescue the family members result in chaos as he avoids deadly snares while trying to call for help and locate his daughter.

As the plot thickens, Arkin’s determination to save his loved ones drives him to extreme measures, leading to life-and-death confrontations with The Collector.
