In 1843 New Orleans, the narrative begins with a charming yet reckless gambler, Paul Regret, who finds himself embroiled in a duel over a woman. In a moment of hesitation, rather than merely wounding his opponent, he inadvertently kills him. This unexpected turn of events leads Regret to realize that he has slain the son of a powerful Louisiana judge, prompting him to flee to avoid the death penalty.

While aboard a riverboat, he encounters a captivating woman, Pilar, who employs her associate, Amelung, to investigate Regret’s past. Initially cautious, Regret soon succumbs to Pilar’s charms, convinced she is genuinely interested in him, not his wealth.

However, the following morning, his peace is shattered when Texas Ranger captain Jake Cutter arrives in his quarters to apprehend him. Jake’s mission is to transport Regret to the Texas Rangers’ headquarters, where he will be handed over to a Louisiana marshal. Before their departure, Regret wishes to bid farewell to Pilar, but to his dismay, she has vanished.

As they travel across the plains — Jake on horseback and Regret on a slow-moving mule to ensure he doesn’t escape — they reach a ranch that Jake once owned. The melancholic scene reveals that the ranch has been ravaged by Indians, resulting in the massacre of the entire family. After Jake facilitates a proper burial for the victims, Regret seizes the moment to escape; he knocks Jake unconscious with a shovel and absconds on horseback, leaving Jake behind with the mule.

At the Texas Rangers’ headquarters, an arrested man named Ed McBain, previously apprehended for gun running, informs Jake and Major Henry about an upcoming deal in a town called Sweetwater, where he intended to sell stolen army rifles. Jake goes undercover, assuming McBain’s identity to complete the deal. Upon arriving in Sweetwater, he meets his contact, Tully Crow, who reveals that he had previously survived a partial scalping at the hands of a Comanche tribe and is now affiliated with a group known as the Comancheros.

A drunken night of revelry ensues, culminating in a poker game where Jake encounters Paul Regret again. Tensions rise as Crow accuses them of cheating, forcing Jake to reveal himself and arrest Regret once more. Following this altercation, Jake compels Regret to unearth the buried rifles he had hidden.

Their journey leads them to another ranch where they find several Texas Rangers conducting a patrol against the Comanche. During dinner with a ranching family, Regret and Jake receive warning of an impending Comanche attack. Despite overwhelming odds, they, along with the remaining Rangers, engage in a fierce defense. Regret’s bravery shines as he escapes on a Comanche pony, only to later return with Major Henry and reinforcements to fend off the attackers.

Grateful for Regret’s actions, Jake seeks a reprieve for him from the judge. Upon arriving at the judge’s office, Regret learns of the Rangers’ plan to commission perjury to save him from conviction. He is made a Texas Ranger under the pretense he has served among them for years.

Jake requests to partner with Regret for a mission to track down the Comancheros. The duo embarks on a journey through the desert, cleverly posing as gun dealers to infiltrate a Comanchero hideout. Upon arrival, they discover a secretive society of thieves and murderers. As they are captured and brought before Graile, the wheelchair-bound leader, Pilar advocates for their lives, leveraging her feelings for Regret. Graile ultimately concedes, allowing them to live and giving them insight into his criminal empire.

As night falls, danger strikes when Tobe, a loyal Ranger, is ambushed and killed. Pilar offers Regret and Jake an escape route, but Jake’s loyalty to law and order drives him to confront Graile at dinner. A dramatic series of events unfold when Tobe’s death is revealed, culminating in a violent confrontation.

As chaos erupts, Graile’s henchmen chase after the fugitives. Amidst the turmoil, the Texas Rangers arrive just in time to rescue them. In the aftermath, with Graile now dead, Regret prepares to ride south with Pilar, bidding a heartfelt farewell to Jake, who recognizes the bonds forged in their chaotic adventure. The saga concludes as the Rangers clean up the remnants of the Comancheros, leaving Regret to contemplate his future alongside Pilar.
