What is Carla Moran's primary experience in the film?

Plot Summary

In the heart of Los Angeles, single mother Carla Moran’s life is shattered when an unseen force brutally assaults her in her own home. As if this trauma wasn’t enough, a series of inexplicable events unfolds, prompting Carla and her children to seek refuge with her best friend Cindy Nash. The family returns to their residence, only for another day to bring more terror - Carla’s car mysteriously loses control on the road, narrowly avoiding disaster.

With her mental state deteriorating, Cindy persuades Carla to consult a psychiatrist, leading her to Dr. Sneiderman. Initially hesitant, Carla agrees to undergo therapy after a particularly harrowing experience in which she is attacked in her bathroom, leaving behind evidence of bite marks and bruises that seem impossible for her to have caused herself.

As Sneiderman drives Carla home, he meets her children and learns about the traumas she endured during her childhood and adolescence, including sexual and physical abuse, teenage pregnancy, and the tragic loss of her first husband. While he initially attributes her paranormal experiences to delusions stemming from past psychological trauma, he agrees to keep an open mind at her request.

However, Carla’s next encounter with the entity leaves no doubt - she is attacked in front of her children, who try to intervene but are met with electrical discharges and physical harm. Her son suffers a broken wrist, leaving Carla feeling helpless and vulnerable.

At a staff meeting chaired by Dr. Sneiderman’s colleague, Dr. Weber, Carla is subjected to more skepticism about the validity of her experiences. Weber believes that the Moran household’s bizarre occurrences are the result of a mass delusion born from Carla’s damaged psyche, sexual frustration, and a propensity for self-destructive behavior.

That night, Carla unwittingly succumbs to the entity’s manipulation, indulging in an orgasm while asleep, courtesy of an otherworldly presence that simulates intimate contact. The next day, Sneiderman urges Carla to commit herself to a psychiatric hospital for further observation, but she refuses, her anger fueled by his suggestion that she harbors incestuous feelings towards her son.

As the aftershocks of the brutal attack subsided, Cindy’s intuition led her to explore the realm of the supernatural alongside Carla. The latter’s chance encounter with two parapsychologists at a local bookstore proved fortuitous, as she convinced them to conduct an investigation at her residence. Initially, they approached the situation with a healthy dose of skepticism, but subsequent paranormal events compelled them to agree to collaborate with Dr. Cooley, the team leader. When Sneiderman (actor’s name) arrived on the scene, he attempted to persuade Carla that the manifestation was merely a product of her mind, only for her to dismiss his concerns. With her case taken seriously, Carla began to feel a sense of relief wash over her.

Her boyfriend, Jerry Anderson, paid a visit, but their evening together was marred by a particularly distressing episode, which he witnessed firsthand. The commotion drew the attention of Carla’s son, who, believing Jerry to be harming his mother, launched a desperate attack on him. The incident left Jerry so traumatized that he ultimately ended their relationship.

Desperate for a solution, Carla agreed to participate in an elaborate experiment designed by Cooley’s team. A meticulous recreation of her home was constructed to lure the entity into a trap, with the ultimate goal of freezing it using liquid helium. Just before the experiment commenced, Sneiderman attempted to persuade Carla to reconsider, revealing his own unorthodox personal interest in her predicament. The entity materialized, but instead of falling prey to the team’s trap, it seized control of the helium jets, redirecting them against Carla. Undaunted, she defiantly stood her ground, declaring that the entity may take her life, but it would never claim her soul. As the tanks suddenly exploded and released a torrent of liquid helium, Sneiderman rushed to her aid just in time to save her from certain doom.

In the aftermath, they realized that the entity had been trapped within a massive block of ice, only for it to break free and vanish into thin air. Sneiderman was left grappling with the realization that Carla had been telling the truth all along. Dr. Cooley was convinced that they had secured a valuable witness in Dr. Weber, but much to her dismay, Weber chose to take refuge in his own doubts, claiming he hadn’t witnessed anything.

The next day, Carla returned home to find the front door slamming shut by itself, accompanied by a chilling demonic voice that echoed through the halls: “Welcome home, cunt.” With an air of calm resignation, she opened the door, exited the house, and departed with her family in their vehicle, leaving the entity’s malevolent presence behind.

A closing disclaimer verified Carla’s relocation to Texas, where she continued to experience periodic attacks from the entity, though they had diminished in frequency and severity.
