Plot Summary

As the specter of foreclosure looms over their homes in Astoria’s “Goon Docks” district, a tight-knit group of young friends, self-proclaimed as the Goonies, gather for one final hurrah before their neighborhood is forever changed. The core quartet - Mikey Walsh, Data Wang, Clark “Mouth” Devereaux, and Lawrence “Chunk” Cohen - converge on Mikey’s attic, where they stumble upon a 1632 doubloon and an ancient treasure map believed to be the key to finding the fabled loot of pirate legend One-Eyed Willy. For these kids, the treasure represents their last hope in saving their homes from the clutches of an expanding country club.

As the stakes grow higher, Mikey’s older brother Brandon “Brand” Walsh becomes a formidable obstacle, prompting the Goonies to devise a plan to outsmart him and gain access to the abandoned restaurant on the coast, which aligns with the treasure map. Brand soon joins forces with Andrea “Andy” Carmichael, a cheerleader harboring a crush on Mikey, and her tomboy best friend Stephanie “Stef” Steinbrenner.

Their investigation leads them to an old hideout of the Fratelli crime family - Francis, Jake, and their mother - where they discover a hidden tunnel in the basement. Chunk becomes separated from the group and finds himself trapped in a freezer, prompting him to flag down a passing car, which happens to belong to the Fratellis. Unbeknownst to Chunk, this fateful mistake seals his fate, as he is imprisoned alongside Sloth, the family’s hulking and deformed younger brother.

As the Goonies navigate the treacherous tunnels, they narrowly evade deadly booby traps while staying one step ahead of the relentless Fratellis. Eventually, they reach the grotto where Willy’s legendary pirate ship, The “Inferno”, is anchored. The group is awestruck by the treasure trove that surrounds them and begins to fill their pockets with gold, but Mikey cautions them against taking any loot without paying tribute to Willy’s skeleton and the scales that serve as a testament to his legacy.

As the Goonies’ daring escape plan begins to unfold, the Fratellis emerge from the shadows, snatching away their hard-won treasure and binding the Goonies with ropes. The fate of the group hangs precariously as they’re forced to march towards the treacherous plank’s edge, only to be momentarily saved by Chunk and Sloth’s timely intervention. The Fratellis’ attention is momentarily diverted, allowing Brand (in a heroic display) to save Andy from certain doom beneath the churning waves, culminating in a heartfelt kiss between the two friends.

Meanwhile, the Fratellis are consumed by their insatiable greed, scrambling to claim every last treasure, including the precious booty on Willy’s scales - an impulsive move that inadvertently triggers one final booby trap. The cavernous grotto begins to implode, threatening to engulf both the Goonies and their adversaries. It takes a heroic effort from Sloth to help them escape the impending doom.

As the dust settles, the Goonies find themselves back on Astoria’s sun-kissed beach, reuniting with their families amidst a flurry of tears and hugs. The Fratellis, however, are met with the cold, unforgiving gaze of justice as they’re apprehended by the authorities. Chunk’s compassion towards Sloth ultimately leads to the gentle giant finding a new home with his friend. Just as Mikey’s father is poised to sign away their beloved home, Rosalita, the Walshes’ loyal housekeeper, makes a startling discovery - a stash of precious jewels hidden within Mikey’s cherished marble collection, ensuring that the Goonies can stave off foreclosure.

As the townspeople gather to hear tales of the Goonies’ incredible exploits, all eyes turn towards the horizon. In the distance, the “Inferno”, now freed from its ancient slumber, majestically sets sail once more, a testament to the indomitable spirit that defines this group of brave young adventurers.
