The fateful arrival of the Demeter on English shores, August 6, 1897, marked the beginning of a terrifying odyssey for its crew. Prior to this ill-omened day, the vessel had made port in Varna, Bulgaria, where it awaited a cargo shipment bound for London. The consignment, comprised of numerous large wooden crates, was transported by locals from Romania with an air of secrecy and an unspoken reluctance to complete the task before sundown. One local, driven by an unsettling sense of urgency, handed a sizeable sum of money to the quartermaster, Wojchek, and another crewman, Olgaren, before departing with his companions.

In the midst of this enigmatic transaction, Clemens, a doctor educated at the prestigious University of Cambridge, overheard the ship's need for new crew members. He seized the opportunity to persuade the Demeter's captain that his medical expertise and knowledge of astronomy would make him an invaluable asset to their mission. Although Wojchek initially rebuffed his efforts, Clemens' timely intervention in the aftermath of a crate's accidental release earned him the respect of Captain Eliot, who subsequently hired him as a replacement.

As the Demeter navigated the Aegean Sea, a mysterious figure materialized on deck amidst the fog, leaving Olgaren and Clemens to ponder its sinister intentions. Meanwhile, a series of inexplicable events began to unfold: one crate fell and burst open in the cargo hold, revealing a woman buried in dirt and clinging to life; and the ship's animal companions, including the faithful Huckleberry, met their untimely demise. The crew, fearing a rabies outbreak, took drastic measures by casting them overboard.

It was amidst this backdrop of unease that Anna, the secret stowaway, awakened from her dirt-encrusted slumber to reveal a shocking truth: she had been a blood slave to the notorious Dracula, forced to surrender her own life force in exchange for the monster's mercy towards her native town. Her words were laced with desperation as she warned the crew that Dracula was already among them, its insatiable hunger for human blood stirring once more. The telltale marks of his cruel bite adorned Anna's ravaged flesh, leaving no doubt about the malevolent force lurking in their midst.

As night descends, the crew is beset by the unholy presence of Dracula, who seeks out Olgaren and transforms him into a mindless thrall. The latter's brief freedom is soon curtailed as he becomes ensnared, bound to a table with makeshift restraints. Yet, even in captivity, Olgaren's vampiric influence proves too potent, allowing him to break free and seek out Toby in the hold. The young boy is subsequently trapped alongside Dracula in the captain's quarters, where they await the dawn. As the morning sun rises high in the sky, Olgaren's undead form bursts into flames, a grim harbinger of the horrors that are to come. Despite desperate attempts at transfusion from his grandfather, Toby succumbs to his injuries and is solemnly wrapped in the sailcloth for burial at sea. The funeral procession takes on an eerie atmosphere as the captain becomes convinced he sees Toby's spirit stirring; it is only when the boy's undead form unwraps itself that Clemens is able to intervene, hurling him into the ocean where he is consumed by the flames.

The remaining crew members, realizing their peril, resolve to destroy their vessel and send Dracula to a watery grave. However, this plan proves ill-fated as Captain Eliot, Abrams, and Wojchek fall prey to the vampire's wrath. In the chaos that ensues, Anna is bitten by Dracula during an attempt to save Clemens. The latter musters the strength to strike down his tormentor with an axe, while Anna manages to pinion the undead creature beneath a section of mast. As the ship limps towards British shores, Anna and Clemens make their escape, leaving the vessel to founder on the rocks. Dracula, freed from his restraints, takes advantage of this turn of events to heave himself onto the shore, his triumphant roar echoing through the night.

As the first light of dawn creeps over the horizon, Anna confides in Clemens that she is succumbing to the vampiric curse, her fate sealed by Dracula's bite. Desperate to avoid a similar transformation, she deliberately immolates herself in the rising sun, leaving Clemens to drift ashore, his spirit crushed by the loss of his companion.

Clemens eventually makes his way to London, seeking solace in the familiar surroundings of a local tavern. There, he creates a portrait of Anna in his notebook, a poignant reminder of their bond and shared struggles. The sound of the Demeter's crew signals their arrival, accompanied by the ominous knocking that heralds their tale of terror. Clemens' gaze falls upon Dracula, resplendent in aristocratic attire, as the vampire vanishes into thin air. Undeterred, Clemens vows to track down his nemesis and send him back to the depths of Hell, driven by a sense of duty to the memory of his fallen comrades.
