Plot Summary

As Alex (Gael García Bernal) and Nica (Hani Furstenberg), deeply in love and soon to be married, embark on a journey through the stunning landscapes of Georgia, formerly a Soviet republic, they hire a local guide (Bidzina Gujabidze) to lead them on an adventure-filled trek through the breathtaking Caucasus Mountains. The tranquil scenery provides a serene backdrop for their trip, allowing them to reconnect and strengthen their bond.

However, their idyllic escapade takes a dramatic turn when they encounter an older man with two boys en route. His initial wariness towards the couple gives way to a sudden, menacing hostility as he raises his hunting rifle, aiming it aggressively at Alex and Nica. In a flash of instinctive protection, Alex swiftly positions himself between Nica and the stranger’s gun, regaining his composure and calmly defusing the situation with the help of their guide. The aftermath is marked by an unsettling silence, with Nica withdrawing from her partner as they continue on their journey.

As the days pass, a palpable rift develops between Alex and Nica, who struggle to reconnect amidst the beauty of their surroundings. Despite Alex’s repeated efforts to bridge the gap, Nica remains aloof, her emotions still reeling from the earlier confrontation. The couple’s guide, noticing their distress, shares a poignant tale of his own failed marriage, and in a moment of vulnerability, he and Nica share a tender kiss. This intimate encounter sparks a change within Nica, who eventually returns to Alex, and the couple rekindles their passion. As they pack up camp at dawn, the air is left thick with uncertainty regarding the state of their relationship, leaving viewers wondering if the couple has finally reconciled or merely delayed the inevitable.
