What mysterious event leaves the stranger in a state of amnesia?

Plot Summary

As the darkness of night envelops Helsinki, a stranger emerges from the shadows, his tired eyes slowly opening onto a park bench. The tranquility of the evening is brutally shattered as three criminals strike, leaving him battered and comatose. The medical staff at the hospital pronounce him dead, but fate has other plans. As the doctors depart, the man awakens to find himself swathed in bandages, his identity shrouded in mystery.

The Nieminen family, a beacon of kindness in an abandoned shipping container by the port, stumble upon the stranger’s fragile form by the sea. They take him in, nursing him back to health with a warmth and compassion that eventually revives his physical body, but leaves his memories in tatters. The man’s name is lost to him, replaced by a sense of anonymity as he navigates this new world.

The marginalized residents of the harbor, bound together by shared struggles and resilience, rally around the stranger. Anttila, a rugged guardian of the port, finds solace in providing makeshift homes for those in need, securing a shipping container for the man. As he searches for employment, the man faces setbacks due to his forgotten past and inability to recall his name, leading to rejection from the employment office. However, it is here that Irma, a volunteer with the Salvation Army, steps in, her compassion and kindness illuminating a path forward.

As the stranger finds purpose in the thrift store, he convinces the Salvation Army band to incorporate rhythm and melody into their performances, persuading their leader to join as a vocalist. Amidst this newfound creativity, a romantic connection blossoms between the man and Irma. The shipyard’s welding rhythms eventually resonate within him, sparking a long-dormant memory – he was once a welder himself.

The man is offered a job at the shipyard, but must first open a bank account to join the payroll. Unfortunately, his lack of identification proves an insurmountable hurdle. Adding insult to injury, he becomes unwittingly entangled in a botched bank robbery, prompting a chaotic sequence of events that culminates with his incarceration. A lawyer from the Salvation Army intervenes, securing his release.

In the aftermath of this ordeal, the man encounters the bank robber at a bar, where he reveals his motivation – a grudge against the bank for bankrupting his earthmoving company and leaving his employees unpaid. Promising to deliver the stolen funds to those affected, the man departs, only to witness the bank robber take his own life in despair.

As the truth begins to unravel like a tapestry torn asunder, the man’s anonymity is brutally stripped away when his wife from Nurmeksa spots him in a newspaper article detailing the brazen bank robbery. The revelation sends Irma reeling, and she promptly cuts ties with her troubled partner, leaving him to confront the devastating consequences of his actions. Crushed by the weight of her rejection, he finds himself adrift in a sea of uncertainty, forced to confront the wreckage of their marriage.

Upon returning to Nurmeksa, he’s met with a stark reminder of his own flaws as he reunites with his estranged wife and learns that their relationship was slowly suffocating under the weight of his crippling gambling addiction. The gravity of his mistakes hangs heavy in the air like a specter, its presence impossible to ignore.

As he turns his back on this painful chapter and heads back to Helsinki, he’s met with an unexpected reunion - this time with the very men who had left him for dead earlier. However, the residents of the harbor, led by the indomitable Anttila, stand united in their determination to take a stand against these ne’er-do-wells.

In the end, it’s a chance encounter that brings the man and Irma full circle as they stroll hand in hand through the harbor, surrounded by the haunting melody of “Muistatko Monrepos’n” sung with poignant beauty by Annikki Tähti.
