The Pyramid 2014

In Egypt, a three-sided pyramid is unearthed by Dr. Miles Holden Denis O’Hare and his archaeological team. When a remote-controlled rover sent to map the interior goes offline, they push inward to recover it, and the path grows increasingly perilous. An unstable floor collapses beneath them, injuring Zahir as his leg is crushed and pinned beneath the rubble. Sunni attempts a risky retreat to higher ground, but is ambushed by an emaciated feline creature and forced to withdraw. The group leaves Zahir behind to search for another exit, only to be haunted by the sound of his screams moments later; they come back to find that only his severed leg remains, stubbornly pinned under the rock.

Chased through a winding tunnel by a pack of the nightmarish creatures, they are rescued by an Egyptian soldier, who is tragically slain by a larger, more terrifying predator. The survivors stumble upon a carved mural that hints at ancient passages from the Book of the Dead and its promise of immortality—an ominous reminder of Anubis, the jackal-headed guide of the afterlife who weighs hearts. Sunni slips into a pit and is impaled on spikes, pursued by the ever-advancing creatures. Despite their efforts to save her, she succumbs to her injuries, forcing the team to fall back.

A burial chamber reveals the body of a 19th-century explorer and his journal, which hints at a possible route of escape. As Holden studies the map, a clawed hand bursts through his chest, tearing out his heart. Nora, Holden’s daughter, and cameraman Fitzie flee, only to realize they’re trapped; they return to find Holden alive but bound to a large scale. The formidable creature returns to the chamber, and Nora identifies it as the Egyptian god Anubis, who weighs Holden’s heart to determine whether he deserves a place in the afterlife. Holden dies when Anubis consumes his heart, ending a brutal test of worth.

With Anubis briefly absent, Nora and Fitzie decipher hieroglyphs revealing that the pyramid was constructed to imprison Anubis, who longs to reunite with his creator, Osiris. They discover an air shaft with a ladder left behind by the soldier and press on, only to be pursued by Anubis himself. Fitzie is killed, leaving Nora alone. She is captured and bound to an obelisk, but uses a hidden blade to sever her bonds. Free at last, she wounds Anubis, who is then besieged by a sudden onslaught of cats. Nora climbs toward freedom, collapsing just before reaching the pyramid’s exit. She wakes to find a child playing with her camera, and Anubis looms from the darkness, pouncing as the screen cuts to black.
