Who is the detective that takes down Triad lieutenant Peter Wei?
As the dramatic drug bust unfolds at a marine loading dock, Detective Stan Zedkov (Yun-Fat Chow) efficiently takes down Triad lieutenant Peter Wei in a highly coordinated operation. However, this pivotal moment ignites a series of events that will lead to unforeseen repercussions.
In his grief, Peter Wei’s father, Terence, becomes hell-bent on avenging his son’s death. He calls upon the services of professional assassin John Lee (Mira Sorvino), who has a reputation for killing on behalf of the Wei family. While Lee feels an inexplicable obligation to carry out this final job, he is distressed by the moral dilemma of potentially harming Zedkov’s innocent seven-year-old son, Stevie, right before the detective’s eyes.
Determined to protect his family and escape Wei’s wrath, Lee seeks help from his old friend Alan Chan, a monk residing in a local Buddhist temple known for his wisdom and compassion. Together, they formulate a plan to relocate Lee’s loved ones to safety, away from the reach of Wei’s vengeful network.
Outraged by Lee’s defiance, Wei sends his most trusted lieutenant, Michael Kogan, to hunt down Lee and eliminate him. As the hunt intensifies, Wei’s operatives are also dispatched to track down Lee’s family, leaving Lee with no choice but to cut ties with the Triad.
In a bid to secure a new identity, Lee approaches skilled forger Meg Coburn for assistance. However, before she can complete her work, chaos ensues when Wei’s men invade her office, leading to a shootout that wreaks havoc and results in Coburn’s capture. Meanwhile, Zedkov interrogates her, but eventually uses her as bait to lure Lee out of hiding.
As Wei grows impatient, he hires two ruthless contract killers, Ryker and Collins, to take over the pursuit of Lee and to fulfill the original contract targeting Zedkov’s son. Amidst this escalating tension, Lee reunites with Coburn, who becomes increasingly aware of the dangers posed by the Triad. He persuades her to help him fulfill their initial agreement, despite her reluctance.
Together, Lee and Coburn navigate a perilous environment where they must remain one step ahead of Wei’s relentless forces. Their journey leads them to critical encounters, including a stop at a photo booth that holds vital information for their survival.
When they finally reach Alan Chan’s temple, devastation strikes as Lee discovers his friend has been brutally killed for providing false information to Wei’s men. Alan’s dying breath reveals that Lee’s family had been moved to Canton instead of Shanghai, urging Lee to act swiftly to protect them.
With only hours left to save his loved ones, Lee, bolstered by the monk’s parting gift of a passport, partners with Coburn in a hotel as they share their personal stories, drawing closer amidst the turmoil. Fueled by his growing concern for Zedkov’s son, Lee formulates a plan to extract information from one of Wei’s henchmen, leading them to a film festival where they courageously intercept Ryker and Collins as they attempt to assassinate Stevie. The ensuing shootout claims Ryker’s life, marking a significant victory for Lee.
In his paranoia, Wei concocts a plan to strike at Lee’s family next. Unbeknownst to Wei, Lee has laid a trap for his enemies outside their base. In a high-octane sequence, Lee executes a daring assault inside the compound while Coburn skillfully maneuvers through the chaos in a truck, turning the tides against Michael and dealing a fatal blow.
Collins attempts to cover fire from his elevated position, but Lee quickly gains the upper hand, culminating in a fierce confrontation with Wei. Despite both being out of ammunition, Lee manages to reload first, leading to a tense ultimatum where Wei vows that Lee’s family will face dire consequences. Lee coldly retorts that they won’t perish while he’s still alive, bringing an end to Wei’s reign of terror.
As Zedkov arrives at the airport to apprehend Lee and Coburn once more, he allows their escape, confiscating only their weapons. In their poignant goodbye, Coburn gifts Lee passports for his mother and sister, symbolizing hope and new beginnings amidst the chaos that has engulfed them.
