Plot Summary

The narrative unfolds around the hauntingly fragile existence of Hanna (Sarah Polley), a war-torn survivor whose body bears the scars of torture in Croatia. Trained as a burn unit nurse, she has undergone survival counseling at a Copenhagen center where her torment was meticulously documented by Inge (Julie Christie). Seeking solace, Hanna fled to Northern Ireland, where she found employment in a factory, her days consumed by the monotony of work and the crushing isolation that follows. Her psyche is ravaged by post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, manifesting in compulsive behaviors – such as meticulously stacking bars of soap – and auditory impairments that render her nearly deaf without the aid of a hearing device.

As Hanna navigates her desolate life, she is compelled to take a forced holiday due to union complaints. Seeking refuge in a seaside village, she stumbles upon an oil company manager discussing the need for a live-in nurse for a burned worker on an oil platform in the North Sea. Moved by the prospect of helping another, Hanna volunteers and begins tending to Josef (Tim Robbins), a man ravaged by burns from a rig fire who has lost his sight temporarily. As she nurses him back to health, he gently coaxes her story of torture from her, tenderly tracing the scars on her chest in a poignant moment of unflinching vulnerability.

Following Josef’s transfer to a hospital, Hanna returns to the factory, her spirit still reeling from the cathartic connection they shared. Meanwhile, Josef seeks out Inge, grappling with the unfathomable depth of suffering and guilt that plagues survivors like Hanna. As their stories intersect, a beautiful love story emerges, one marked by unforgettable character development and a heartwarming conclusion that is as much a testament to the human capacity for resilience as it is to the transformative power of love.
