Sarah Lustig and Tyler Cortice are just one week away from tying the knot. Although Tyler’s father, Kirby Cordice, is a wealthy doctor, Sarah’s dad, Kenny Lustig, insists on footing the entire bill, leading to a rather frugal wedding affair.

As the big day approaches, the two families confront a series of chaotic challenges. In an effort to impress Kirby, Kenny attempts to upgrade his hotel room into something more luxurious. However, due to the ineptitude of the hotel staff, the renovations end up causing damage to other rooms occupied by family members, which forces the already crowded Lustig household to accommodate them. To make things even more complicated, the hotel is also slated to host the wedding reception, and the mess at the hotel could jeopardize events.

In a funny turn of events, [Kenny]‘s elderly uncle, Seymour, is mistakenly thought to be a World War II veteran, a title he never earned. In a bid to uphold the family’s reputation after receiving media scrutiny, Kenny persuades the mayor to hold the reception, masquerading it as a celebration for [Seymour]‘s supposed heroism at City Hall. Yet when Seymour unexpectedly passes away during Tyler’s bachelor party, Kenny is faced with the uncomfortable truth that [Seymour]‘s injuries didn’t come from battle but from diabetes. As word gets to the mayor, the event is promptly canceled. To salvage the situation, [Kenny], his wife Debbie, and [Seymour]‘s son Charles resort to capturing bats and releasing them down the chimney of City Hall.

Finally, the wedding day arrives, and despite the multitude of setbacks, the ceremony unfolds without any hitches. However, during the reception, Kirby confronts Kenny about his erratic behavior, helping him understand that he was just trying to fulfill a last wish for his daughter. Unfortunately, this heart-to-heart occurs amid a dance, where a clumsy mishap causes water to pour onto the electronics, igniting a fire.

Feeling remorseful, Kenny reveals his true motivations behind his actions to Sarah, who finds it in her heart to forgive him. The reception ultimately continues at the Lustig home, and in a gesture of unity, Kenny and Kirby come to an agreement that the latter should cover the costs of their first big family vacation together.
