In the desolate setting of 1997’s “The Wasteland”, the world has transformed into a grim panorama under the tyrannical rule of the overlord Zeus. As the once clear skies remain cloaked in relentless filth and the air is thick with hopelessness, a strange community thrives, governed by fear and desperation. Zeus wields his power through appalling psychological tactics, using a horrific device to turn prisoners into a liquid form of sustenance for the starving inhabitants of this forsaken land.

Amidst this chaos lives The Kid, a resourceful teenager with a deep love for comic books and an affinity for scouring the wasteland on his loyal BMX bike. Venturing into the ruins, he manages to secure a prized edition of Turbo Rider, which he trades with junk dealer Bagu for much needed water, granting him a brief escape from the drudgery of his surroundings.

As The Kid pedals into the distance, he fortuitously meets Apple, a mysterious girl whose quirky spirit and relentless positivity provide a stark contrast to the grim realities they face. Initially hesitant to embrace her eccentricities, his reservations gradually dissolve in the face of her gentle tenacity, and he soon finds himself enchanted by her unique charms. However, when one of Zeus’ thuggish henchmen seizes Apple, The Kid feels a twinge of caution but ultimately decides to risk it all for this captivating newcomer. The duo seeks refuge in his underground bunker, where he shares essential survival skills, fostering a bond that deepens with each lesson.

As The Kid teaches Apple the tricks of the trade in surviving the wasteland’s dangers, their friendship blossoms into something more profound, like a rare bloom thriving amid barren soil. Yet, their fragile peace is shattered when Apple is seized once more. She urges The Kid to save himself, propelling him into a flight for survival. By a stroke of luck, he encounters the remnants of the genuine Turbo Rider, donning its formidable armor and wrist weapon, fueled by an urgent desire to rescue Apple.

Meanwhile, Frederick, a courageous cowboy and arm-wrestling champion, finds himself in dire peril as he attempts to save his brother from Zeus. After enduring a brutal amputation at Zeus’ hands, he is betrayed and tossed into the same arena where both The Kid and Apple are imprisoned.

Just as The Kid arrives to lend a helping hand, he realizes his wrist weapon has lost its charge. Captured and thrown back into the arena with Apple and Frederick, they must summon all their wit and resourcefulness to navigate their escape from Zeus’ oppressive grip. In a startling reveal, The Kid learns that Apple is not merely a girl; she’s actually a friendship-model robot, shattering his perception of their relationship.

As they further traverse the wasteland’s treacherous terrain, Apple’s failing components lead them on a mission to salvage parts at a nearby robot graveyard. With initial guidance from Bagu, they strive to navigate the perils, but tragedy strikes when Bagu is captured and brutally tortured by Zeus’ men, forcing The Kid to confront the harsh realities alone. Following Bagu’s betrayal, the duo narrowly evades capture while outsmarting Skeletron, the merciless enforcer of Zeus.

The stakes rise when Apple unexpectedly meets a tragic fate at the hands of Skeletron, leaving The Kid heartbroken. Just as despair sets in, Frederick returns, now equipped with a robotic arm, rescuing The Kid from the graveyard’s toxic air, only to deliver the heartbreaking news that Apple cannot be revived. Consumed by sorrow and fury, The Kid teams up with Frederick, setting their sights on Zeus’ stronghold, motivated by vengeance and a quest for justice.

As The Kid discovers the cruel truth of his past, realizing that Zeus murdered his parents to seize their precious water when he was a vulnerable child, he finds a new sense of purpose. With Frederick by his side, he squares off against Zeus and his band of henchmen in a showdown filled with relentless action. Just as it appears that defeat is inevitable, Apple miraculously reappears to save The Kid from the clutches of death.

Enraged by the blunders of his men, Zeus retaliates with a barrage of bullets that severely injures all three. Providence intervenes when The Kid’s stash of View-Master discs, hidden beneath Turbo Rider’s armor, serve as an impromptu shield. Awakening amid chaos, he commandeers his wrist weapon and devastates Zeus’s remaining minions with explosive shells. However, a shocking twist unveils Zeus as a corporate-engineered robot, bent on extinguishing any opposition.

In a final confrontation, The Kid retaliates, obliterating Zeus with explosives supplied by Frederick. Tragically, Apple sacrifices herself in the process to save The Kid, leaving him utterly desolate. Following the explosion, a previously hidden freshwater source emerges, suggesting a glimmer of hope for the parched inhabitants of the Wasteland.

As The Kid lays Apple to rest with a mournful ceremony, Frederick extends an offer for him to remain and help bring life-giving water to their beleaguered people. Nevertheless, burdened by grief, The Kid declines and ventures into the barren unknown, fueled by an insatiable need to explore the mysteries that shroud the wasteland.
