In 1981, Romania's Botoşani cityscape was awash with bold, uppercase chalk messages demanding freedom and reforms. Mugur Călinescu, a teenage graffiti artist, faced the wrath of the secret police. This true story inspired documentary theatre director Gianina Cărbunariu and filmmaker Radu Jude to craft a daring exposé, weaving together archival TV footage, cooking shows, and wiretapped conversations to reveal the Ceaușescu regime's Orwellian surveillance state.
