What initially gets Cosimo imprisoned?

Plot Summary

As Cosimo’s (Cosimo) ill-fated attempt at auto theft lands him behind bars, a chance encounter with an elderly inmate sets his mind whirling with the tantalizing prospect of “Bellini” - a masterfully crafted heist that had eluded its previous would-be perpetrator due to a life sentence. Cosimo implores his girlfriend Rosalind to locate someone willing to serve time in exchange for a substantial sum, allowing him to break free and execute the Bellini plan. Rosalind and Toto (Toto) subsequently recruit a motley crew of misfits: Basil, Leon, Riley, and Pero “Pepe” Mahalovic, a boxer who agrees to take Cosimo’s fall in exchange for $16,000. However, Pepe’s sentence is unexpectedly suspended, leaving Cosimo trapped while Pepe walks free.

Upon his return, Pepe faces the wrath of Rosalind and the others, demanding a refund for his betrayal. Though he claims to have used the $16,000 to settle debts, Pepe offers to share the details of Bellini in exchange for their understanding. The six misfits then decide to take matters into their own hands, opting to carry out the heist themselves.

The Bellini plan centers around a nondescript brick building on Chester Street, converted from a flour factory into apartments and a jewelry store. An elderly acquaintance had previously worked on the conversion, discreetly installing a false wall between one apartment and the room housing the jewelry store safe. Riley (Riley) seizes an opportunity to procure a video camera from a street market, hoping to capture the combination by filming the jeweler opening the safe. However, after their initial attempt fails, they enlist Jerzy, a wheelchair-bound safecracker, to teach them how to drill into the safe - all while keeping a wary eye out for Detective Babitch’s increasing surveillance.

As tensions rise, two maiden aunts and their maid, Carmela, move into the long-vacant apartment. Leon and Basil (Basil) concoct a ruse, pretending to accost Carmela, in an attempt to secure her keys - all while Pero (Pero) uses his charm to score a date with one of the aunts. Meanwhile, behind bars, Cosimo’s chance at freedom arises when a guard falls ill, allowing him to don the uniform and make his escape.

Cosimo eventually confronts Pepe and the others, who attempt to persuade him that they can split the Bellini take evenly. However, he lashes out at Rosalind (Rosalind) for her perceived betrayal and threatens to eliminate anyone attempting to pull off “his” Bellini - a plan that has become an all-consuming obsession.

As Rosalind’s spirits begin to wane, she departs the group, leaving Pero to discover an unexpected attraction to Carmela. Little does he know, she confides in him that her aunts will be out of town for days, providing them with a window of opportunity. Meanwhile, fate intervenes as Cosimo meets his untimely demise in a devastating bus accident. In the aftermath, Basil finds himself entwined with Michelle, Leon’s sister, despite her insistence on finding an “honest man.” The group’s grief is short-lived, however, as they must contend with the consequences of their own actions.

As the night wears on, Riley makes a last-minute decision to leave his baby in Rosalind’s care before departing for Pero’s apartment. But fate has other plans, and he finds himself facing a brutal beating at the hands of the men from whom he stole a camera. His arrival at Pero’s apartment is met with a mix of shock and concern as he shows up with his arm in a cast and reeking of Vicodin.

Meanwhile, Leon’s world is turned upside down when he discovers Basil’s newfound commitment to an honest lifestyle, sparked by his romance with Michelle. This development prompts Basil to abandon the group’s plans for the night, citing his desire to prove himself worthy of her love. As the clock ticks away, tensions come to a head as the group prepares to embark on their high-stakes heist.

The operation itself proves to be a series of mishaps and misadventures. Toto finds himself sans pants, while Pero’s attempts at stealth are foiled by a botched break-in that leaves them staring at outdated floor plans. The group’s frustration mounts as they realize they’ve broken into the wrong apartment - the kitchen - at 3 am. With time running out and their plan crumbling around them, they’re forced to settle for a meager haul of $1,000 from a cookie jar.

As they regroup in the aftermath, Riley proposes that they part ways forever, but his companions have other ideas. They decide to use the spoils to pay off Riley’s wife’s jail fine, leaving him with nothing but a heavy heart and a bus ticket out of town. As the group disperses, Leon heads home to make amends with Michelle, while Pero is left to ponder the true value of relationships over material wealth.
