Plot Summary

As the cameras roll back in time, the 2013-2014 Maidan Uprising unfolds like a cinematic tapestry, woven from historic footage and the candid testimonies of two dozen protesters who braved the tumultuous streets of Kyiv. The narrative begins with a promise of prosperity, as Ukraine’s pro-Europe citizens eagerly await the EU-Ukraine trade agreement, touted as the key to unlocking their nation’s future potential. However, this prospect is cruelly snatched away, replaced by an unexpected alliance with Russia that leaves protesters feeling betrayed and disillusioned.

As tensions simmer, Kyiv’s iconic Maidan Nezalezhnosti becomes a hotbed of defiance, as pro-Europe citizens occupy the square, determined to make their voices heard. Months pass, marked by escalating standoffs between government forces, police, and increasingly organized protesters. The air thickens with anticipation as barricades are erected, violent skirmishes erupt, and brutal repression takes its toll.

The death toll mounts, and February 2014 brings a particularly bloody chapter in the uprising’s chronicle, as the killings of protesters reach a gruesome crescendo. In response, protest leaders vow to take drastic action, pledging to bring down the government by force just hours later. Amidst this chaos, Ukraine’s pro-Russia President Viktor Yanukovych (Viktor Yanukovych) flees to Russia in the dead of night, clearing the way for new elections and a fresh start – one that promises to steer Ukraine towards a brighter future with Europe on the horizon.
