Alfie and Helena go their separate ways after their divorce, leading Helena to seek guidance from a fortune teller named Cristal. Meanwhile, their daughter Sally is grappling with the challenges of her own troubled marriage to author Roy, who once basked in the glory of a successful book but is now anxiously awaiting news from his publisher about his latest manuscript. To support them, Helena offers financial help for their rent.

In a surprising turn of events, Alfie marries Charmaine, a woman with a questionable profession. On the other hand, Roy finds himself infatuated with Dia, a musicologist whose presence he catches through a window near their flat. Dia, however, is engaged to another man. As for Sally, she considers an affair with Greg, her new boss at an art gallery, who confesses to having difficulties in his own relationship. Ironically, Greg is entangled in an affair with Iris, Sally’s protégée.

As the story unfolds, Roy’s book receives a rejection, adding to his woes. He learns of a tragic accident that claimed the life of his friend Henry, a fellow writer who had just shared a brilliant manuscript with him. In a desperate bid for success, Roy resolves to claim Henry’s work as his own, which is ultimately well-received by readers. After a series of lunch dates, he persuades Dia to end her engagement, leaving her fiancé and their families heartbroken.

Alfie’s marriage to Charmaine takes a tumultuous turn as they argue over her extravagant spending. He attempts to rekindle things with Helena, but she turns him down. Complications arise when Charmaine becomes pregnant after an encounter with another man, prompting Alfie to demand a DNA test to determine fatherhood—a request Charmaine dismisses as inconsequential.

Stressed and uncertain, Sally quits her job and approaches Helena for a promised loan to start her own art gallery. However, Helena, influenced by Cristal’s astrological advice, denies her request, infuriating Sally. To make matters worse, Roy discovers that a mix-up regarding the accident means Henry is not dead but rather in a coma, recovering.

Ultimately, dissatisfaction looms over the characters, except for Helena, who embraces a newfound belief in reincarnation through Cristal’s teachings. She perceives her life as a mere chapter in an ongoing saga of existence. Jonathan, the owner of an occult bookshop, shares her convictions, and they both receive a supernatural affirmation of their relationship from his late wife during a séance.
