What significant announcement does Nino make before his birthday?

Plot Summary

As Nino’s 33rd birthday milestone approaches, he drops a bombshell on his unsuspecting family by announcing his impending nuptials just three weeks away. This seismic revelation sends shockwaves through the household, particularly among his three sisters: Sonja (married to Hugo and navigating her own creative pursuits); Michelle (devoted to charity work and her husband Jan); and Wanda (a free-spirited artist with a secret affair brewing with Hugo). The sisters are torn asunder by Nino’s decision, knowing he has long been living with Felix - a fact that makes his choice of marrying Bo, a woman he hardly knows, all the more mystifying.

As they converge on the registrar’s office to confront Nino, they’re taken aback by Bo’s warm demeanor, which only serves to further confound them. Unbeknownst to Nino, his sisters initially plot to derail his wedding plans, but their efforts are ultimately for naught. Meanwhile, Sonja stumbles upon Hugo and Wanda’s clandestine affair, prompting her to exact a creative revenge by weaving a scene from their illicit romance into her latest article.

As the Portuguese wedding date draws near, Bo inadvertently becomes entangled in the sisters’ machinations, blissfully unaware of their true intentions. Eventually, the truth about Nino’s sexuality comes spilling out, and to everyone’s surprise, Bo proves accepting and understanding of his relationship with Felix. However, her subsequent announcement that she’s carrying Nino’s child sends everything spinning off-kilter, forcing Nino to confront his own doubts and insecurities - including a growing realization about his gender identity.

On the day of the wedding, Nino’s mother intervenes, inviting Felix to join the proceedings, which prompts Nino to call the whole affair off. With his true feelings finally laid bare, he confesses his love to Bo, who offers unwavering support and facilitates his reunion with Felix. In a stunning turn of events, the registrar proceeds to marry Nino and Felix on the very same day.

In the aftermath, Nino embarks on a transformative journey, undergoing gender confirmation surgery, while Bo gives birth to their child. As the family converges in the hospital, Felix tenderly places their newborn in Nino’s waiting arms, marking a new beginning for this unconventional trio.
