Plot Summary
As Dennis (Paul Giamatti) steps out of a four-year prison sentence in Quebec, he is thrust into a harsh reality: his wife Therese has deceived their daughter Michi into believing he has succumbed to cancer. This revelation is a painful blow, especially when Dennis learns that his former partner-in-crime, Rene (Paul Rudd), is now involved with his estranged ex. Consumed by anger, Dennis confronts Therese in a furious outburst, and later confronts Rene in a fit of rage.
With his parole status hanging by a thread, Dennis must confront the bitter truths of his new existence: unemployment and homelessness amid a crippling recession. His path to redemption lies in an unlikely partnership with Rene, who has now begun a relationship with Dennis’s ex. Out of desperation, Dennis proposes joining Rene on a Christmas tree-selling venture in New York City, hoping to earn enough money to buy Michi the piano she has always dreamed of owning.
