Plot Summary

As Dennis (Paul Giamatti) steps out of a four-year prison sentence in Quebec, he is thrust into a harsh reality: his wife Therese has deceived their daughter Michi into believing he has succumbed to cancer. This revelation is a painful blow, especially when Dennis learns that his former partner-in-crime, Rene (Paul Rudd), is now involved with his estranged ex. Consumed by anger, Dennis confronts Therese in a furious outburst, and later confronts Rene in a fit of rage.

With his parole status hanging by a thread, Dennis must confront the bitter truths of his new existence: unemployment and homelessness amid a crippling recession. His path to redemption lies in an unlikely partnership with Rene, who has now begun a relationship with Dennis’s ex. Out of desperation, Dennis proposes joining Rene on a Christmas tree-selling venture in New York City, hoping to earn enough money to buy Michi the piano she has always dreamed of owning.

As they traverse the unforgiving streets of Brooklyn, Dennis and Rene encounter a series of setbacks, such as being kicked out of a café and having a run-in with a rival tree salesman. Things take a more positive turn when Olga, a kind-hearted Russian woman, purchases their first tree. Her generosity doesn’t stop there—she invites Dennis to enjoy a hot meal and shower at the residence of two dentists where she works.

The following day, Rene receives a shocking call from his wife Marie, asking him to sign the divorce papers. Devastated, he leaves Dennis to manage their tree-selling operation. When Rene returns days later with an engagement ring for Therese, it only fuels Dennis’s fury.

In an urge to vent his frustrations, Dennis reveals Rene’s betrayal to two potential buyers, but through the chaos, he finds a newfound sense of purpose. Confiding in Olga about his commitment to buy Michi the piano, Dennis is met with her willingness to assist him.

As night falls, Olga, Rene, Dennis, and Nzomo, an African man instrumental in their selling efforts, gather at their lot. They share vodka and stories, bonding over the complexities of their lives. However, trouble brews when Dennis and Rene are robbed by a man posing as blind, who had previously bought a tree from them.

Seizing this strange opportunity, Dennis enlist Olga’s help to steal a Steinway piano from the dentists’ home. Finally, with Michi’s new piano within reach, Dennis watches from a distance as his daughter plays beautifully, leading him to embrace both Therese and Rene, enveloped in a sense of forgiveness and redemption.
