As the McCallister family gathers at their Chicago residence, excitedly preparing for their Christmas vacation to Miami, the youngest son, Kevin McCallister, begins to feel uneasy about leaving behind the snowy winter for the sun-soaked beaches. His worries are compounded by the lack of traditional Christmas trees in Florida’s warm climate. A pivotal moment occurs during a school Christmas pageant, where Kevin’s older brother, Buzz McCallister, embarrasses him on stage. In retaliation, Kevin pushes Buzz, causing a chain reaction that results in hurt feelings and half-hearted apologies back at home. Frustrated and seeking refuge from the turmoil, Kevin retreats to the attic.
The following morning, as the family rushes to make their flight, Kevin inadvertently becomes distracted while handling his father’s luggage and ends up boarding a flight to New York City instead. Alone in the bustling streets of the metropolis, he decides to explore, encountering a peculiar homeless woman who tends to pigeons in Central Park, frightening him off. That same day, Kevin manages to check into the extravagant Plaza Hotel using his father’s credit card, completely oblivious to the fact that his old foes—the infamous Wet Bandits (now rebranded as the “Sticky Bandits” thanks to Marv’s sticky glove)—have also arrived in the city post their prison escape.
As Christmas Eve approaches, Kevin visits a quaint toy store owned by the kind-hearted Mr. Duncan, who plans to donate the day’s earnings to a local children’s hospital. Moved by the spirit of giving, Kevin spontaneously donates money and, in return, receives a pair of charming ceramic turtledoves, with Mr. Duncan encouraging him to share one as a token of everlasting friendship. However, a fateful encounter with the Sticky Bandits upon exiting the store sends Kevin sprinting back to the safety of the Plaza Hotel. The concierge confronts him about the credit card’s unauthorized use, as it’s been reported stolen; just then, Kevin is cornered by Harry and Marv. As they unveil their plan to rob the toy store, Kevin manages to escape, aided by a passing stranger who effectively neutralizes the Sticky Bandits with a timely slap.
Meanwhile, while the McCallisters journey to Miami, they soon realize that Kevin is missing. Panic ensues as they file a police report and track Peter’s credit card usage. In the meantime, Kevin finds himself navigating his uncle Rob’s empty townhouse, which is currently under renovation. Forced to explore, he wanders into Central Park and encounters the intriguing Pigeon Lady, whose heartbreaking narrative about lost love resonates with him, prompting Kevin to encourage her to embrace trust once more.
Inspired by her story, Kevin introspects on his own misdeeds and recalls Mr. Duncan’s benevolence. Determined to atone for his earlier wrongs, he devises a plan to thwart the impending robbery at the toy store. Using his cleverness, Kevin sets traps throughout his uncle’s townhouse, ensnaring Harry and Marv in his clever contraptions.
As the ill-fated thieves clumsily trigger the booby traps, Kevin skillfully evades capture, orchestrating a chaotic chase that ultimately leads the villains back to the townhouse. With law enforcement closing in, he manages a clean getaway, leaving behind incriminating evidence of Harry and Marv’s crimes.
Finally, upon the McCallisters’ arrival in New York, Kate is touched by Kevin’s rekindled love for Christmas trees, leading to a heartfelt reunion at the iconic Rockefeller Center tree. On Christmas morning, a delightful surprise of gifts arrives at their hotel room, graciously sent by Mr. Duncan, who appreciates Kevin’s bravery in thwarting the robbery.
In a poignant moment of reconciliation, Kevin reunites with his family and gifts one of his treasured turtledoves to the Pigeon Lady, forever solidifying their newfound friendship.
