As a restless teenager in Flagstaff, Arizona, Terri Fletcher harbors a secret passion for singing, yearning to break free from the constraints of small-town life. The promise of a $10,000 scholarship ignites her ambition, but her overprotective father, Simon (played by Kris Kristofferson), casts a shadow of disapproval over her dreams, threatening to diminish them completely. Meanwhile, her elder brother, Paul, finds himself caught in the family business, sacrificing his own wishes out of a sense of duty.

On the brink of Paul’s graduation-day celebration, rising tensions between Simon and Paul erupt into a fierce confrontation, leading to Paul’s grounding. That very night, Terri and Paul sneak out under the veil of darkness to embrace their mutual love for music at a Three Days Grace concert. The memory of that evening remains forever vivid for them, until fate intervenes tragically as they are struck by a reckless driver. Upon waking up in a hospital room, Terri is devastated to learn that Paul has lost his life due to the accident.

Plagued by guilt and sorrow, Terri abandons her dreams, believing she is the cause of Paul’s tragic end. Yet, her mother, Frances (played by Mary Swanson), offers her wise words of comfort, reminding her that Paul would have wanted her to chase her dreams rather than allow them to die alongside him. With a mixture of fear and newfound determination, Terri resolves to reclaim her aspirations, motivated by her mother’s encouragement to pursue the music program in Los Angeles, which she believes could unlock her true talent.

Arriving in the bustling City of Angels, Terri faces a series of daunting challenges: her beloved jacket goes missing, her taxi driver is as gruff as the desert terrain, and her initial rejection from the music school feels like an insurmountable barrier. However, amid these obstacles, she builds unbreakable friendships with a diverse group of aspiring musicians, including Kiwi (played by Adam Garcia), introspective pianist Sloane (played by Mandy Moore), and virtuosic violinist Denise (played by Hayden Panettiere). As she dives deeper into her musical journey, Terri’s horizons broaden, although her past continues to haunt her.

In this dynamic environment, Terri becomes enamored with British songwriter Jay (played by Jonathan Jackson), their chemistry igniting a shared passion for music. However, their burgeoning romance faces complications due to Robin Childers (played by James Marsden), who struggles with lingering feelings for Jay. After the turmoil, Terri and Denise find themselves on a rooftop, where they help a distraught Jay regain his composure.
