As the dust settles on Bricksburg’s recent salvation, Emmet Brickowski (Chris Pratt](/actor/chris-pratt)) and his friends are faced with a shocking and ominous arrival: extraterrestrial beings from the planet Duplo. This unexpected encounter takes place right after Finn (Jadon Sand), an unsuspecting young builder in the real world, receives permission from his father, Lord Business (Will Ferrell), to explore his little sister’s LEGO enthusiasm. The Duplos’ nefarious motives soon come to light, prompting Emmet to attempt peace with a heartfelt gift, only for it to be devoured by their imposing leader. This is where Lucy, aka Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), seizes her chance to retaliate, inadvertently triggering pandemonium that shatters windows and leads to significant destruction across Bricksburg. In the ensuing chaos, Emmet and Lucy must rally an unexpected team made up of Batman (Will Arnett), Unikitty (Alison Brie), Metalbeard (Nick Offerman), and Benny (Charlie Day). However, despite their best efforts, they find themselves thoroughly outmatched by the relentless wave of Duplo aggression. Meanwhile, President Business (Will Ferrell) has abandoned his duties to enjoy a leisurely game of golf.
Fast forward five years, Bricksburg has morphed into the grim Apocalypseburg. What was once a vibrant city now stands as a shadow of its former self, with its residents resigned to their bleak new existence. Lucy solemnly informs Emmet that the Justice League—comprised of Superman (Channing Tatum), Wonder Woman (Cobie Smulders), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Green Lantern (Jonah Hill), and Cyborg—had initially set out to confront the Duplos, but their fate remains shrouded in mystery. Meanwhile, Batman has opted for a solitary existence in his towering fortress, drawing wisdom from Alfred (Ralph Fiennes). Emmet, the only beacon of hope against the prevailing despair, remains optimistic. When he reconnects with Lucy over coffee, he’s met with her stony silence. He shares his vivid dream of a dolphin-adorned clock striking 5:15 and a black hole poised to swallow their friends in the catastrophic “Ourmamageddon.” Lucy, too consumed by her own dark thoughts, fails to provide comfort, and although Emmet’s cheerful attempts at conversation are brushed aside, he reveals his creation of a cozy home just outside the city—an offer Lucy dismisses as childish and impractical.
Lucy’s fears become reality when a spaceship lands, dropping a heart-shaped bomb, sending Emmet, Lucy, and Ultrakitty (formerly Unikitty) into a panic. They attempt a hasty escape with a makeshift vehicle, but Emmet’s thoughtless blinker usage attracts attention from their pursuers. Seeking refuge in Batman’s formidable stronghold, they encounter a challenge in General Sweet Mayhem (Stephanie Beatriz), who skillfully infiltrates the fortress and captures Lucy, alongside Batman, Unikitty, Benny, and Metalbeard. Emmet, eager to save his friends, implores the Master Builders for help, but they are hesitant, questioning his perceived immaturity.
Undaunted, Emmet sets off on a solo mission to rescue his companions, ingeniously transforming his small dwelling into a reliable craft for space travel. Meanwhile, General Mayhem transports the captured Master Builders to her own realm within the Systar System, where they meet the enigmatic Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi (Tiffany Haddish), whose abilities to shapeshift disguise a benevolent nature behind an initially intimidating façade.
As Watevra enchants the group with a soulful serenade that showcases her kind-heartedness, she captivatedly appeases each member with tailored promises: Benny is enchanted by intergalactic spaceships, Unikitty by adorable treasures, Metalbeard by pirate-themed trinkets, and Batman by flattery regarding his legendary status. However, it is Lucy who remains unconvinced.
Watevra’s ultimate objective comes to light as she proposes to marry Batman, envisioning a union that would unify their worlds under her wise leadership. This startling revelation leaves Batman dumbfounded, propelling Emmet toward a more determined quest to rescue his friends and thwart Mayhem’s villainous designs.
Emmet’s quest through the vastness of space is fraught with peril, but he narrowly escapes disaster when aided by the audacious Rex Dangervest (Chris Pratt), who pilots a formidable fist-shaped ship. Under Rex’s guidance, Emmet learns about his companion’s origins—an abandoned toy who metamorphosed from his forgotten state beneath a dryer into a pioneering cowboy/raptor trainer fueled by sheer grit. Together, this dynamic duo traverses perilous challenges to rescue their friends from General Mayhem while confronting the enigmatic Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi.
As the Master Builders gather on Planet Sparkles for the impending nuptials, Lucy undergoes a stunning transformation, revealing that the black coloration in her hair was merely a clever disguise for her true radiant blue locks that shimmer like the planet itself. In this vibrant atmosphere, Watevra’s peculiar entourage, including Ice Cream Cone (Richard Ayoade), Banarnar (Ben Schwartz), and Balthazar (Noel Fielding), attempts to inject joy into the occasion with the upbeat rhythms of “Catchy Song.” However, Lucy’s escape from this cheerful endeavor takes a turn when she unexpectedly encounters Bruce Willis (voicing himself as a Lego) during a moment of serendipity in a ventilation shaft.
Coincidentally, Emmet and Rex arrive on the same planet, surrounded by an array of cheerful LEGO mini-figures. Emmet is astounded by the unwavering positivity that envelops this community. The Justice League is also present, revealing Superman forming an unexpected bond with Green Lantern, whom he once scorned, and even Lex Luthor (Ike Barinholtz). While Rex finds the merry rendition of “Catchy Song” unbearable, he notices how effortlessly everyone embraces the moment.
In an intimate dinner, Batman shares his introspections with Watevra, allowing Mayhem to unearth the vulnerabilities hidden beneath his formidable exterior. Watevra insightfully perceives that her own motivations for her marriage proposal resemble Batman’s own insecurities. This observation ignites a glimmer of self-awareness within Batman. Just then, as Watevra serenades him with a song about her distaste for Gotham City’s finest, Batman finds his resolve wavering and ultimately proposes to her.
As the grandeur of the wedding cake towers above, a multitude of citizens gathers atop its sugary summit to witness the union of Batman and Watevra. Unbeknownst to the celebration, Lucy, Emmet, and Rex secretly conspire to derail the ceremony. Despite Emmet’s unwavering trust in Lucy, Rex remains suspicious of her, suspecting she has fallen under some form of mind control.
As their plan unfolds, Lucy confronts Mayhem, whose helmet inadvertently falls off, revealing a tender side hidden behind her fierce facade. As Lucy saves Mayhem from a precarious ledge, the latter discloses a shocking truth: neither Watevra nor Mayhem ever harbored evil intentions; they merely yearned to create a bridge between their worlds. This newfound understanding pushes Lucy toward self-discovery as she begins to see Rex’s true nature—a cunning figure intent on maintaining the divide between their realms.
Outside the ceremony, Lucy witnesses Watevra morph into the heart that Emmet had crafted for the Duplos. In a moment of clarity, Emmet channels his grown-up powers to topple the wedding cake, unleashing pandemonium and tearing open a rift in reality. The underlying cause of this cataclysm lies in the real world, where Finn’s sister, Bianca, inadvertently triggered chaos by introducing her brother’s LEGO sets into her room. As Bianca and Finn engage in an escalating conflict over their toys, their mother reprimands them, finally demanding the Legos be contained within a “black hole”—a metaphorical storage container that would trap Emmet’s worst fears: Ourmamageddon.
As the pieces of truth begin to unveil, Rex shares a startling revelation with Emmet: he is, in fact, Emmet’s future self! The expedition to save his friends has taken an unforeseen twist, with Emmet left abandoned and powerless beneath a dryer. Driven by resentment and disillusionment, Emmet emerged from the dryer transformed, casting aside his carefree persona for a hardened and mature identity. In a desperate desire to amend the past, he created a haphazard time machine crafted from varying temporal transport methods—like the DeLorean, Bill and Ted’s phone booth, the Tardis, H.G. Wells’ contraption, and even a hot tub—hoping to locate his younger self before it was too late.
However, Emmet’s younger self was unwilling to participate in Rex’s schemes, leading Rex to unceremoniously expel him from the time machine and back beneath the dryer. As the urgency of their plight spread among the others, Lucy, Mayhem, and the Master Builders succumbed to melancholy, lamenting the loss of their dazzling world in a touching refrain.
Meanwhile, in the real world, Finn experiences a moment of clarity, realizing his past missteps with Bianca. He seeks reconciliation, gifting her the cherished Watevra heart. As Emmet struggles to liberate himself from under the dryer, Rex teams up with him, steadfastly intent on keeping him trapped. However, with Finn and Bianca’s reconciliation renewing joy in their lives, Lucy shakes off her emotional restraints. She rushes to rescue Emmet, uniting forces with him to thwart Rex utilizing one of Mayhem’s explosive heart bombs.
As Rex starts to erode, recognizing the flaws in his path, he bids a poignant farewell to Emmet and Lucy. Reunited at last, they welcome their friends back into their lives, while Finn and Bianca unite to harmonize their worlds. President Business returns from his golf session only to face immediate expulsion from the community.
Determined to rebuild and advance, Lucy constructs a new home for herself and Emmet. In a heartwarming gesture, she surprises him with an original album featuring the iconic song “Everything is Awesome.” As Emmet gazes upon the cover, a light of recognition dawns upon him—the revelation that Lucy was one of the original artists behind their beloved anthem slowly pieces together the intricate tapestry of their shared experiences.
