What's After the Movie
Eric Stoltz was born Eric Cameron Stoltz on September 30, 1961 in Whittier, California, the son of Evelyn Vawter, a violinist and schoolteacher, and Jack Stoltz, an elementary school teacher. He spent parts of his childhood in American Samoa and Santa Barbara before enrolling at the University of Southern California, where he left after his junior year to pursue acting full‑time. Moving to New York in 1981, he studied under Stella Adler and Peggy Feury, and early on joined a repertory company that performed ten plays at the Edinburgh Festival. His first screen credit came in 1978 as Steve Benson in the television adaptation of The Grass Is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank, and he quickly forged a friendship with director Cameron Crowe after a minor role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982). Crowe would cast him in four subsequent films, solidifying Stoltz’s reputation as a versatile young actor capable of both dramatic intensity and comic timing.
