In the quaint Rhode Island landscape, Kelly Ferguson, affectionately dubbed "Monster Girl" among her high school peers, harbors a secret that sets her apart. As a freshman, she confided in classmates about a childhood encounter with a monstrous entity, earning her the eerie moniker.

Meanwhile, Kelly's mom has arranged for her to babysit Jacob, the son of her boss Ms. Zellman, allowing the single mother to attend their office Halloween party. As Kelly settles into her new role, Jacob shares his own dark secrets, revealing a world where monsters lurk in every shadow. His vivid drawings depicting these terrors only serve to further unsettle Kelly.

As the night wears on, Kelly's vigilance is put to the test when she discovers three diminutive creatures abducting Jacob. Her 911 call proves futile, and she finds herself forced to seek assistance from Liz Lerue, a member of an enigmatic society dedicated to protecting children from the forces of darkness. The Boogeyman has claimed Jacob as his own, and Kelly and Liz embark on a perilous quest to rescue him.

Liz's cunning and resourcefulness prove invaluable in tracking down the Toadies, small monsters known for their ability to steal children's nightmares. As they close in on their quarry, Liz uses her unique connection with the infant she cares for as bait to lure out the Toadies, ultimately leading them to a confrontation with Kelly.

In a desperate bid to recover Jacob, the girls turn to the Rhode Island Order of Babysitters' headquarters at Brown University, where they meet with the vice president and trainees (SITs). Kelly's memories are stirred by a magical dust that unlocks her childhood recollections of an ominous figure known as the Grand Guignol, a master thief of dreams who delights in sowing chaos.

As Kelly reflects on her own past encounters with these dark entities, she realizes that her unique ability to bring her dreams to life makes her a target for the Boogeyman. The SITs, scarred by their own experiences with such malevolent forces as children, band together to support Kelly in her quest to rescue Jacob and confront the evil that threatens to consume them all.

As Curtis sets his sights on brewing a potent concoction, he embarks on a global quest for the essential ingredients, while simultaneously arming Kelly with a arsenal of tools to aid their mission. Their plan is to embed the Angel Hair potion within the formidable Boogeyman itself, requiring nothing short of a Herculean punch. With Kelly's training in full gear, Curtis entrusts her with a tracker device, cleverly disguised as a Toadie, which they release into the wild in the hopes it will lead them straight to their elusive adversary.

The Toadie, now equipped with its new tracking abilities, quickly finds and alerts the Boogeyman, who sets a trap in motion. Kelly and Liz find themselves unwittingly drawn into the web, lured by the tracker's signal to a Halloween party that Kelly had been keen on attending. As they descend into the basement, they're met with an unsettling presence - a shadowy monster lurking in the darkness. Their subsequent pursuit of this phantom ultimately proves fruitless, as they're forced to concede defeat at the hands of a cleverly designed dead end.

Meanwhile, Curtis continues to perfect his potion-making skills, working tirelessly to create the Angel Hair formula. Kelly, meanwhile, finds herself on a parallel mission, seeking to prevent the Boogeyman from exploiting the power of a feline-inspired amulet. Despite her best efforts, she's ultimately thwarted, and Liz falls prey to the Boogeyman's schemes. As Kelly makes her escape, Curtis is busy concocting the final touches on his potion.

Kelly's next move takes her to a condemned lighthouse, where Jacob - the unwitting host of the nightmares - is being held captive. Simultaneously, Curtis' potion-making skills are put to the test as he strives to create the Angel Hair formula. Kelly's resourcefulness is put to the ultimate test as she evades the Toadies' clutches and outwits her captors.

With Liz now freed from her hypnotic trance, Kelly seizes the opportunity to turn the tables on their adversaries. In a daring move, she utilizes Curtis' multi-functional tool to take down her foes and snap Liz back to reality. As Kelly infiltrates the chamber where the nightmare creatures are poised for release, she unleashes a monster punch that embeds the Angel Hair potion into the Boogeyman's unsuspecting form.

With Jacob now freed from his nocturnal terrors, Kelly must navigate the delicate process of returning him home before Ms. Zellman's arrival. Her success in this endeavor earns her high praise and unexpected rewards - not only is she entrusted with babysitting duties for the night ahead, but Liz also recommends her to the prestigious Order of Babysitters. As if these accolades weren't enough, Kelly's crush Victor takes a romantic interest in her, setting the stage for a bright future filled with possibilities.
