The film begins by exploring Amy Winehouse’s ( Marisa Abela ) Jewish roots, highlighting the musical influence of her father, Mitch ( Eddie Marsan ), and her grandmother, Cynthia ( Lesley Manville ). Their shared passion for music sets a vibrant backdrop. As Amy’s close friend, Tyler James, presents a demo tape to his manager, Nick Shymansky ( Sam Buchanan ), it’s clear that Amy’s remarkable talent will soon shine. After signing with Island Records, she releases her debut album, Frank (2003), navigating her way through the highs of acclaim and attention.

However, the record label’s desire to alter her stage persona clashes with Amy’s artistic vision. She decides to take a break to immerse herself in her song-writing, leading her to a fateful meeting with Blake Fielder-Civil ( Jack O’Connell ) at a pub in Camden Town. Their deep connection evolves into a tumultuous romance complicated by Blake’s cocaine struggles and Amy’s battles with alcoholism and bulimia. Amidst her friend’s warnings about their risky dynamic, Blake suggests they should separate, prompting Amy’s heart-wrenching despair as he seeks a reconciliation with his ex, Becky.

Before flying to New York City, Amy is devastated to learn about her grandmother’s terminal lung cancer. Despite grappling with these challenges, she transforms her pain into powerful inspiration, leading to her globally acclaimed second album, Back to Black (2006). Remarkably, after the album’s launch, Blake and Amy rekindle their love, culminating in a wedding in Miami, a ceremony that leaves Mitch feeling disheartened.

Tragedy strikes as Blake gets imprisoned for assaulting a pub landlord, and upon his sentencing, Amy becomes engulfed in addiction. When Blake, upon release, reveals his desire for a divorce, stating his wish for a fresh start, Amy’s world spirals out of control. The discomfort and dissatisfaction push Amy to seek help, entering a rehabilitation center.

In a triumphant turn, she is honored with five Grammy Awards over the next few years. Now residing in Camden Square, Amy works to overcome her alcohol dependency, sharing an emotional farewell with Mitch. Yet, the shadows of her past linger; the paparazzi reveal that Blake has moved on, fathering a child with his new girlfriend, Sarah.

The film poignantly concludes with a heart-wrenching scene of Amy singing “Tears Dry on Their Own”, as she ascends the stairs to her bedroom, embodying the depth of her struggles. A somber postscript reveals the tragic news of her passing at the age of 27 on July 23, 2011, due to alcohol poisoning following a period of recovery, laying her to rest alongside Cynthia.
