Ali Rose, portrayed by Christina Aguilera, relocates to Los Angeles after leaving her bar job due to unpaid wages. Upon her arrival, she struggles through numerous auditions until fate leads her to a dazzling burlesque club one evening. Drawn in by the sounds of lively music, she discovers the stunning performances featuring Tess, played by Cher, and the club’s dancers, as they enchant the audience with “Welcome to Burlesque.” Excitedly inspired, Ali aspires to take the stage herself after meeting the charming bartender, Jack, portrayed by Cam Gigandet.
Jack recommends that Ali audition for Tess, but she faces immediate rejection and is ushered out by Sean, played by Stanley Tucci. Rather than abandoning her dreams, Ali decides to stick around and starts working as a waitress at the club while Tess and Sean keep a watchful eye on her persistence. After Jack advocates on her behalf, Tess reluctantly agrees to give Ali a chance.
Following an unfortunate burglary at her apartment, Ali seeks assistance from Jack, mistakenly believing he is gay. As she navigates her newfound living situation and the reality of Jack’s impending marriage, she finds herself overwhelmed by his kind heart and generosity. When Georgia, played by Julianne Hough, announces her pregnancy, the club holds auditions for a replacement. Seizing the moment, Ali auditions in private and delivers a stunning rendition of “Wagon Wheel Watusi,” convincing Tess to let her join the ranks of the club’s dancers.
This decision does not sit well with Nikki, portrayed by Kristen Bell, a late and often inebriated performer. When Nikki shows up drunk during a performance, Tess nudges Ali to step in. Behind the scenes, tension rises as Tess argues with her ex-husband and business partner, Vince, played by Peter Gallagher, over the club’s uncertain financial state and a persistent offer from Marcus, played by Eric Dane, who aims to buy the club to rescue it from foreclosure.
As Ali’s star begins to rise, Nikki’s jealousy intensifies, and in a dramatic performance, Ali showcases her incredible voice, which prompts Tess to plan a new show centered around her talents. Jack, admiring Ali’s burgeoning career, expresses his feelings for her to Sean, yet his own engagement complicates matters. Even as the club thrives, Tess struggles to meet the bank’s demands.
In a whirlwind of emotions, Ali becomes entangled with Marcus, who turns out to be less interested in her and more in her fame. Meanwhile, Jack attempts to warn her of Marcus’s true intentions, but she is drawn in by Marcus’s captivating charm. When tensions come to a head after a series of dramatic events—culminating in a showdown between Tess and a drunk Nikki—Ali must confront the complexity of her relationships and her place in the club.
Eventually, a light of hope shines for Tess as Ali uncovers the concept of “air rights,” which enables them to negotiate a deal that secures the club’s future. In the climax of their story, Tess reconciles with Nikki and remakes their club into a vibrant reflection of her vision. As Ali performs “Show Me How You Burlesque,” it becomes a triumphant celebration not only of her journey but also of the bonds forged in the spirited world of burlesque, alongside Jack, who finally reveals his true feelings and potential for a future with her.
