Where do the families meet at the beginning of the story?

Plot Summary

In this captivating tale, three families converge at a sun-kissed Cornish beach, where siblings Ros (Ros) and Robbie are reunited with their father David, his girlfriend Alice, and her daughters Samantha and Maudie (Maudie), fresh from America. Initially, the children harbor animosity towards one another, but as they stumble upon an enigmatic magical creature known as Psammead or Sand Fairy, their mutual disdain gradually gives way to a budding friendship. This mystical being, capable of granting a solitary wish per day, only for it to dissolve with the setting sun.

As the children’s wishes take them on thrilling adventures through time, they find themselves transported 100 years into the past, where they encounter the refined and imperious Tristan Trent (Tristan). Initially, Ros is held at gunpoint by this aristocrat, who demands insight into the Sand Fairy’s secrets. However, Samantha, Robbie, and Maudie cleverly utilize Psammead’s powers to rescue their sibling.

Seeking to make their wishes permanent, the children embark on another journey through time, only to be thwarted in their efforts. Returning to the present, they find themselves facing a new threat from Tristan Trent III, who seeks to exploit the Sand Fairy for his own nefarious purposes. The resourceful siblings outsmart this villain by trapping him on the beach with Psammead’s help.

As the children’s bond grows stronger, they realize that their initial dislike has given way to a deep affection for one another. In a heartwarming conclusion, Ros, Robbie, Samantha, and Maudie decide to take Psammead under their care, hiding him from their parents in the bathroom of their family home.
