In rural Upstate New York, Victor Modino—a thirty-something who works as a cook—keeps the small roadhouse alive: Pete and Dolly’s, a place founded by his now-deceased father and tended by his elderly mother. The bar’s daily rhythm is anchored by Dolly, who, despite poor health, remains a formidable presence in the back of the kitchen, where she grumbles at Delores, a longtime employee who once had an affair with Pete. Delores views Dolly’s aging as a challenge to her own standing, and the tension between these two women bleeds into the restaurant’s atmosphere.

When a new waitress, Callie, arrives—soft-spoken and recently left college in Syracuse—the mood shifts. Callie instantly notices Victor’s quiet charm and culinary talent, and she encourages him to consider attending the Culinary Institute of America. Dolly and Delores, however, greet the idea with skepticism, casting doubt on the younger woman’s ambitions.
