Philosophy professor Abe Lucas finds himself submerged in existential turmoil as he arrives at the prestigious Braylin College in Rhode Island. With a pervasive sense of self-doubt and a heavy fog engulfing his spirit, he struggles to make sense of a life that seems devoid of meaning. To cope, he turns to excessive drinking. Amidst this disarray, two women capture his attention: Rita Richards, a chemistry professor suffocated by her own marriage, and Jill Pollard, one of his students entangled in a stifling relationship with Roy.

Jill finds herself at a crossroads, torn between her loyalty to Roy and her burgeoning feelings for Abe. As she navigates her complex emotions while living with her parents, Rita yearns for an escape from her own oppressive situation. Caught in this emotional turmoil, Abe seeks comfort in his platonic bond with Jill, yet he cannot entirely resist the temptation of a romantic encounter with Rita.

However, Abe’s deep-seated depression emerges in a particularly vulnerable moment when he fails to perform during his initial intimate encounter with Rita. This moment serves as a trigger, pushing his ongoing existential crisis to a breaking point. The situation takes a dramatic turn when Abe and Jill overhear a conversation in a local diner regarding a woman who stands to lose custody of her children due to the corrupt dealings of a family court judge.

Outraged by this injustice, Abe feels compelled to act. He convinces himself that, as an outsider, he won’t be easily implicated, and decides to eliminate the judge as an act of defiance against evil. With this newfound conviction, his spirits seem to lift, rekindling his zest for life—especially with Rita.

As Abe immerses himself in this dark plan, he meticulously observes the judge’s routines and identifies a moment of vulnerability: the judge’s habitual stop at a bench for juice after his morning run. Combining his knowledge from the college’s chemistry lab—where both he and Rita work—Abe secures cyanide. He cunningly replaces the judge’s juice with the lethal concoction and watches as the poison takes its toll.

In the chilling aftermath of the judge’s demise, Abe feels a dangerous sense of fulfillment, believing he has made a meaningful impact by ridding the world of malevolence. His bond with Jill intensifies into romance, but their happiness is short-lived as Roy uncovers their relationship and promptly ends things with her. As Abe grapples with his new reality, both Jill and Rita begin to connect the dots surrounding Abe’s suspicious actions, including missing items and secretive conduct in the lab.

Rita’s unease escalates when she senses that Abe is harboring secrets. Torn between her feelings for him and her growing doubts, she contemplates leaving her husband to start anew with Abe. Meanwhile, Jill, delving into Abe’s past, stumbles upon incriminating evidence that starkly highlights his deception. The burden of guilt weighs heavily on Abe until he confesses to Jill, who stands resolute in her moral beliefs. Faced with these revelations, she decides to end their romantic relationship.

However, the darkness within Abe culminates in a violent confrontation, culminating in his attempt to push Jill down an elevator shaft. In a grim turn of events, Abe loses his footing and falls to his demise, his treachery thus leading to his own undoing.

As Jill emerges from this harrowing experience, she seeks solace in the presence of Roy, with whom she begins to reconcile. Gazing out over the vast ocean, she is left to ponder the weighty lessons learned from her tumultuous encounter with Abe, forever changed by the consequences of their fateful connection.
