In a surprising turn of events, Hannah Kolinsky (formerly a lackadaisical drug dealer with a penchant for intoxication) finds herself at the center of a misadventure when mistaken identity lands her in handcuffs. The aftermath of this ordeal sees her dumped by her boyfriend and left to pick up the pieces of her shattered existence. However, just as it seems like fate is conspiring against her, Hannah Kolinsky receives an unexpected opportunity from Tanner (a charming but unscrupulous scion of a prominent Southern family) to assume the role of tour guide at his ancestral Antebellum mansion. Unbeknownst to Hannah, this seemingly innocuous job offer is merely a ploy by Tanner to lure her into his bed, having previously dismissed the previous guide for rejecting his advances.

As Hannah struggles to navigate her new responsibilities, she quickly proves herself to be an uninspired and awkward tour guide, failing miserably in her attempts to emulate Lady Wadsworth (the long-departed matriarch of the estate). Her ineptitude is met with a healthy dose of scorn by the ghost of Wadsworth, who begins to haunt the premises, chastising Hannah for her subpar performance. Despite initial resistance, Hannah eventually surrenders and allows the spectral Wadsworth to mentor her in the ways of history and etiquette, forging an unlikely bond between them as they grow more alike.

With a newfound sense of purpose and a growing unease towards Tanner's advances, Hannah turns her attention to Max (a gentle and erudite history professor she encounters by chance), finding solace in his company. She also joins forces with Wadsworth to uncover long-buried secrets, including the truth that the estate was originally intended for bequeathment to Wadsworth's best friend and former maid, whose descendants still reside within its walls today. As they embark on a series of detective exploits to right the wrongs of the past, Hannah and Max find themselves drawn together, their partnership blossoming into a romance.
