On the eve of a monumental assignment in Birmingham, Ivan Locke must supervise the largest non-nuclear facility and non-military concrete pour in European history. The evening twists when he learns that Bethan, a colleague from a Croydon job with whom he had an affair seven months earlier—an affair that left her pregnant—has gone into premature labour. Despite his professional duties and the fact that his wife and sons are waiting at home to catch a football match, he makes a decisive choice: he will drive to London to be with Bethan during the birth. He carries the weight of a past he cannot shake—he never forgave his father for abandoning him as a child, and he is determined not to repeat that mistake, even though his feelings for Bethan are complicated and distant.

What follows is a tense, two-hour journey marked by constant communication. Locke engages in a total of 36 phone calls as he races against time. He speaks with Gareth, his boss, who ultimately fires him; with Donal, his trainee whom he guides through the pour; with Katrina, his wife of 15 years, to whom he confesses his infidelity; and with Eddie and Sean, his two sons, who call separately with updates on the football match he had planned to watch with them—and later with Katrina’s emotional breakdown. The calls extend to the maternity unit staff—Sister Margaret and Halil Gullu—who are managing Bethan through troubling complications. City officials also come into play: the council head, Cassidy, and PC Davids, who coordinate road closures needed to ensure the 225-plus concrete trucks can access the site smoothly.

Throughout the journey, Locke is forced to juggle professional setbacks and personal revelations. He is banned from his own house and confronted with the consequences of his past actions, all while trying to maintain focus on the live birth. He also talks through the logistical challenge with Donal, coaching him through the essential steps of the pour despite mounting obstacles. In the car, he stages imaginary conversations with his dead father, whom he envisions as a passenger, using those exchanges to berate the one who left him and to vow that he will not repeat that abandonment.

As the drive progresses and the hospital comes into view, the tension peaks. Near the end, Bethan calls with the sound of their baby, confirming the birth and the fragile connection between Locke’s professional使命 and his personal redemption. The film unfolds as a study in responsibility, choice, and the cost of trying to balance a demanding career with the deeply human need to be present at the moment of new life.
