Plot Summary

Lucas Hill (Keanu Reeves), a seasoned American diamond merchant, embarks on a treacherous journey to Russia, driven by the promise of a lucrative deal. His quest for rare blue diamonds of dubious provenance takes an unexpected turn when his contact, Pyotr (Boris Gulyarin), abruptly abandons him at the eleventh hour, leaving Lucas to face the wrath of the buyer, Boris Volkov (Pasha D. Lychnikoff). In a desperate attempt to salvage the situation, Lucas agrees to deliver the entire consignment – worth a staggering $50 million – within a tight 48-hour deadline for a modest commission.

As Lucas navigates the complexities of the Russian underworld, he finds himself entangled in a web of deceit and corruption. A rival of Boris’, Vincent, offers him a lucrative alternative: hand over the diamonds to him instead, promising a whopping 7% commission. Meanwhile, Lucas becomes enmeshed in a passionate and all-consuming romance with Katya (Ana Ularu), the captivating owner of a small Siberian café.

However, their whirlwind affair is threatened by the ominous presence of Yefrem (Aleks Paunovic), a menacing patron who wields a cruel authority over Katya. Her elder brother, Ivan, further complicates matters by insisting she marry Anton, a local boy. As Lucas delves deeper into the mystery surrounding Pyotr’s whereabouts, he uncovers a shocking truth: his contact has been hiding in plain sight, having sold fake diamonds to a ruthless mafia boss who is now hot on his trail.

Lucas’s situation becomes increasingly precarious as bad weather grounds his pilot, stranding him in Mirny. It soon becomes clear that Lucas’s personal life back home is equally troubled; he’s struggling to reconnect with his wife, leaving him feeling disconnected and adrift.

As the stakes escalate, Lucas discovers a crucial clue: Pyotr’s hiding spot contains a sample diamond identical to the one he gifted Katya. Convinced that she holds the key to unraveling the mystery, Lucas asks Katya to join him in St. Petersburg. However, his hopes are dashed when the sample inside her candle is revealed to be a fake.

With the FSB suddenly taking an interest in him, Vincent warns Lucas to flee Russia immediately. As he faces a choice between honoring his commitment to Boris or abandoning the deal and risking everything, Lucas must navigate the treacherous landscape of Russian crime and corruption to emerge unscathed.

As Lucas converges on a clandestine meeting with the enigmatic Boris, Katya slips unnoticed into the shadows, her curiosity getting the better of her. The price for Boris’ indulgence in delay is steep: Katya’s mouth is pressed into servitude as she succumbs to his demands, forced to extract the essence from his erect form. The illicit transaction concluded, Lucas and Katya return to their hotel lair, but little do they know that a formidable force has been waiting in the wings. The FSB, with an air of authority, lays down the law: they’ve apprehended the counterfeit diamonds from the unsuspecting buyer, Pyotr’s accomplice. With Lucas’ reputation on the line and his life hanging precariously in the balance, they propose an audacious plan: use Lucas’ diamond trade cred to peddle the fake gems as genuine blue diamonds to Boris, knowing full well that this ruse would seal a death sentence not just for Lucas but also for Katya and his wife. The FSB’s offer is clear: help them sell these impostors to Boris, or face the consequences.

As Lucas navigates the treacherous landscape, he delivers the tainted diamonds to Boris with an air of confidence, assuring him that they are authentic blue diamonds. Unfazed by the risks, Boris entrusts Lucas’ word and forgoes the use of a spectrometer, which would have revealed the deceitful nature of these stones. Once the payment is wired, the FSB sees fit to release Lucas to his flight back home, but he has other plans in store. A cryptic message from an anonymous spy sends him hurtling towards Mirny to reunite with Katya, where he also discovers a disturbing truth: Pyotr lies lifeless on a desolate plot of land.

Ivan’s counsel is clear-cut: Lucas must extricate himself and Katya from Russia at all costs. However, Lucas’ reluctance to drag Katya into the crossfire between himself and Boris prompts Ivan to empathize with his concerns. In a surprising turn, Ivan provides Lucas with the necessary firepower for self-defense. The next morning, Lucas finds himself poised for battle as Pavel and his team launch a brazen attack on Pyotr’s cabin. Lucas puts up a valiant fight but ultimately falls prey to Pavel’s ruthless bullets, leaving Katya and Ivan to wonder at the devastating consequences of his ill-fated decision.
