In the seemingly ordinary suburban landscape of Austin, a young boy named Max (10) retreats into an imaginative sanctuary called Planet Drool, where his creations, Sharkboy and Lavagirl, spring to life. As he navigates the challenges of his mundane reality, including being bullied by Linus and grappling with his parents' tumultuous relationship, Max's dream world becomes an escape from the harsh realities of growing up.

Sharkboy and Lavagirl materialize in the real world, beckoning Max to join them on Planet Drool. However, their idyllic paradise is threatened by the corruption of Mr. Electric, a malevolent force that has infiltrated the dream realm. United in their quest for redemption, Max, Sharkboy, and Lavagirl embark on an odyssey to rectify the damage, confronting obstacles and forging unbreakable bonds along the way.

As they venture deeper into Planet Drool, they encounter Tobor, a forgotten robot toy that serves as their guide. Together, they concoct a plan to harness the power of the Crystal Heart, which holds the key to freezing time and repairing the dream world. But their efforts are thwarted by Minus, revealed to be Linus, the mastermind behind the corruption.

After escaping Minus' clutches, Sharkboy and Lavagirl face a series of trials that culminate in a poignant sacrifice as Lavagirl gives her life to save Sharkboy. This selfless act awakens something within Max, imbuing him with reality-warping powers that allow him to become the Daydreamer.

With his newfound abilities, Max revives Lavagirl and confronts Minus once more. In a climactic showdown, Max defeats Linus and extends an olive branch to create a better dream world together. Mr. Electric rejects this offer, instead targeting Max in the real world.

As a tornado bears down on Austin, Sharkboy and Lavagirl intervene to save Max's parents. Realizing the full extent of his selfishness, Max surrenders the Crystal Heart to Marissa, his classmate, who harnesses its power to destroy Mr. Electric.

In the aftermath, peace is restored to Planet Drool and its inhabitants. Sharkboy assumes the throne as King of the Ocean, embarking on a quest to find his father, while Lavagirl becomes Queen of Earth's Volcanoes. Max, having reconciled with his parents, sets about repairing Tobor and implores others to "dream a better dream and work to make it real," acknowledging that even in the darkest moments, hope and redemption are within reach.
