The Blackening 2023

The cinematic adventure begins at a secluded woodland retreat, where Shawn (Jay Pharoah) and Morgan (Yvonne Orji), a couple excited to celebrate Juneteenth, arrive ahead of their friends. While exploring the cabin, they stumble upon a mysterious board game called The Blackening, which features a deeply troubling and racist caricature of African American stereotypes. A disembodied voice invites them to partake in a game that poses a dreadful challenge: can they name the horror films where black characters managed to survive?

Shawn’s unfortunate answer—“Scream 2” with Omar Epps and Jada Pinkett-Smith—is met with an ominous silence. Suddenly, the lights cut out, and an arrow zooms through the darkness, striking Shawn in the neck. In a panic, Morgan attempts to flee but is captured by an unseen force.

The next day, a diverse group of friends gathers at the cabin, oblivious to the alarming events that unfolded overnight. Lisa (Antoinette Robertson), still grappling with her complicated history with Nnamdi (Sinqua Walls), arrives alongside Allison (Grace Byers) and Dewayne (Dewayne Perkins). Yet, their festive spirit is tempered by Nnamdi’s arrival with King (Melvin Gregg), which puts Dewayne on edge. Tensions simmer just beneath the surface as they prepare for an evening of celebration.

Meanwhile, another friend, Shanika (X Mayo), has a disturbing encounter on her way to the cabin at a gas station with Clifton (Jermaine Fowler), a former classmate who claims to be part of their gathering, despite their memories suggesting otherwise. She grows increasingly uneasy, especially when confronted by a menacing gas station attendant (James Preston Rogers).

Upon their arrival at the cabin, the group faces a bizarre obstacle: Ranger White (Diedrich Bader), who insists on verifying their identities. Once cleared for entry, they begin their preparations for the Juneteenth celebration. However, Nnamdi’s snide comments about King marrying a white woman exacerbate the underlying tensions.

As night descends, the friends gather to enjoy food and drinks, but a sense of unease soon creeps in as they question why Clifton has joined their gathering. The power flickers out again, leading them to discover The Blackening, a game eerily reflective of their fears and personalities. The menacing voice reemerges, revealing that Morgan is still alive but trapped and at the mercy of their sinister situation.

Compelled to engage in this twisted game, the friends face a series of trivia questions revolving around the intricate world of black culture. Their struggles to correctly identify significant black actors from the beloved sitcom Friends carry heavy consequences: Morgan is attacked yet again, managing to escape only to be recaptured shortly afterward.

As the night spirals into madness, they find themselves trapped in a room where the killer manipulates the continuation of The Blackening. Each friend attempts to justify who among them should be sacrificed. Dewayne argues that his sexual orientation should spare him, while Shanika claims her specific skills entitle her to remain unharmed. Discussions around Allison’s mixed heritage fuel further contention.

Eventually, the group controversially decides on Clifton as their designated sacrifice, and he is brutally shot in the chest with an arrow by their aggressor. Once they manage to break free from this horrific ordeal, they resolve to find Morgan and seek help. Despite their instincts warning them against it, they accept Allison’s suggestion to split up: she, King, and Shanika venture out while Dewayne pairs with Lisa and Nnamdi.

Their separate paths lead to a harrowing series of confrontations with the killer, who shows no hesitation in unleashing violence, even against Ranger White, who initially attempts to aid them. In a climactic moment, Allison, King, and Shanika unite against their assailant, culminating in a fierce struggle that ultimately leads to his defeat.

When they remove the mask from their fallen foe, they are horrified to discover the gas station clerk who had earlier intimidated Shanika. Meanwhile, Lisa, Nnamdi, and Dewayne unexpectedly encounter the twin brother of their original adversary, revealing that their presence there had been orchestrated by a hired operative.

As they delve deeper into the cabin’s labyrinthine confines, they stumble upon Clifton’s corpse, only for him to dramatically revive and disclose himself as the true architect of that fateful night’s horror. Fueled by a festering resentment due to their doubts about his identity as a black individual, Clifton’s twisted motivations come to light. Following a particularly humiliating incident, he spiraled into reckless living, landing him four years behind bars, and now he has meticulously plotted his revenge.

As the friends quiver before their vindictive executioner, Clifton’s gruesome design unfolds, culminating in a heart-wrenching finale where he unceremoniously sends Shawn and Morgan to a gruesome burial in the depths of a well. In a last-ditch fight for survival, the remaining friends muster the courage to stand against their tormentor, ultimately toppling him into the same well, ending his reign of terror.

As dawn breaks, casting light on their harrowing night, the friends reluctantly call the authorities, hoping that justice will prevail. However, their relief is but fleeting, as a police-issued hose unfurls a dousing spray of water, awakening them to the stark realities that lie ahead once more.
