Tooling along the open highway in a beautifully restored vintage Mercedes convertible might seem like the ultimate dream vacation, wouldn’t you agree? This is exactly what Sean is experiencing, albeit with a few unexpected complications. First off, he doesn’t actually own the car; he’s simply been contracted to chauffeur it from sunny California to the vibrant state of Florida. Moreover, he’s been given very specific instructions: no hitchhikers allowed. No problem, thinks Sean—he’s got everything under control… that is until he finds himself stranded with a flat tire in Arizona. His night spirals downhill further when he is forced to take shelter in a motel next to some very raucous neighbors, loses his wallet, and finally breaks his own rule by picking up a hitchhiker just to afford gas.
Enter Nick, who initially strikes Sean as a decent guy—definitely not the psychopathic type. But what Sean is blissfully unaware of is that Nick is on a mission as a vampire hunter, and his encounter with Sean is about to thrust him into a nightmarish adventure he never anticipated.
As their journey continues, the two make a stop at a roadside rest area where they run into a red Charger with a dead battery, a car that looks alarmingly familiar to Sean as it belongs to his obnoxious motel neighbors. Surprisingly, Nick recognizes the car’s passengers as well; they’re none other than the vampires—Kit, Cym, and Teddy—along with their helper, Pen. Much to Nick’s horror, Cym recognizes him as a vampire hunter but, rather than attack, Kit decides to hold off on their murderous plans.
That evening, after checking in at the Palms Inn Motel, Sean and Nick grab a bite to eat. On their way out, they encounter a sick girl, Megan. Without hesitation, Nick decides to take her back to their motel room and places her in an ice bath. The situation escalates when Megan starts screaming, prompting Nick to hold her down while Sean administers a morphine injection. Sean’s knowledge surfaces as he explains that she suffers from a rare blood disorder induced by a virus, and the only way to cure her is by eliminating the original source of infection. Yet, amid the chaos, Sean finds himself bitten—not by a vampire, but in a frantic moment of desperation.
The next morning, when Nick reveals to Sean that he has indeed been bitten by a vampire, Sean initially brushes it off as a joke. Nick then leads Sean outside to confront the reality of their predicament. They stumble upon the red Charger, where Pen is napping on the hood, and in a swift display of confidence, Nick knocks him out with a shovel. However, their relief is short-lived as Teddy ambushes them from the trunk of their own car. Nick comes to the rescue, and in a shocking turn of events, Teddy bursts into flames under the sun’s harsh rays.
As disbelief gives way to reluctant acceptance, Sean starts to understand the gravity of their situation. He begins to inquire about those he has come to know as the Forsaken—vampires who roam the earth with a dark lineage. Nick shares the gruesome origins of the Forsaken, tracing back to the siege at Antioch during the Great Crusade, where a demon struck a covenant with eight knights who, in a moment of despair, turned against their brother. These knights transformed into the first vampires, forever cursed and driven to hide from sunlight. With only four remaining progenitors, they must be eradicated on holy grounds.
Nick suggests they seek refuge at an old Spanish mission, approximately 60 miles away, where they can set a trap for Kit. However, their trek is cut short when the vampires catch up to them, engaging in a reckless chase as they ram their Charger into the Mercedes. Each time Sean and Nick manage to evade them, the relentless vampires come back for more, leaving them at the mercy of an empty gas tank and no way to escape.
In a desperate bid for shelter, they accept the invitation of a kind old lady named Ina, who fortuitously lives on hallowed ground. That night, however, their sanctuary is threatened as Kit and Cym storm the house. Nick realizes this is the perfect battleground, and despite suffering serious injuries—including a gunshot wound to Nick and a broken leg for Sean—they ultimately manage to sever Cym’s head from her body. Just as it seems that Kit will overwhelm Sean, the first rays of dawn flood the room, turning him to ash.
The conclusion of their harrowing night sees Sean and Megan cured of their afflictions, but for Nick, the fight is far from over. He learns that Kit was not the source of the virus that befell him; the search for the true progenitor continues.
Epilogue: Fast forward three months, we find Nick hitchhiking in Colorado when a familiar red Charger pulls up. To his surprise, it’s Sean, who is now en route to Denver and ready to take on the next challenge. As they set off, Nick can’t help but wonder about the fate of the Mercedes. “Oh, you have no idea!” Sean laughs, igniting their adventure anew.
